LAWN TENNIS

THE DAVIS CUP AUSTRALIANS’ SUCCESS. HAVANA, May 13. The day’s play opened in clear, hot weather before a large gallery. Morales won only four games in the first two sets, and these were gained only through Crawford’s occasional inaccuracies, for the Australian outplayed Morales throughout with place shots which extended the Cuban star. He was placing his drives to Morales’s Weak backhand. Crawford was slow in realching his form at the start of the match, serving many double faults. The Australian eventually won, 6 —3, 6—l, 7—5. ’ . Morales’s opposition stiffened in the third set. He won the first three games, winning the third with a service of aces. Crawford seemed to be tiring owing to the heat, but he recovered, making repeated placements with such precision as to indicate his mastery of the situation, which was never really in doubt. Crawford won the next three games, and, after the Cuban had run up a 5—4 . lead, the Australian finished with' a burst of speed to run out the set, taking the first three games, as his opponent weakened badly. The point scores for the match showed’Crawford 108 points, of which 24 were placements,-to Morales’s . 84 points (12 placements). Hopraan defeated Vollmer, o—2, 6 1, 4—6, 6—l. ■ ■ ■ • m Although Hopman’s consistently efficient court covering and accurate timing and placing of his shots won the first two sets, Vollmer was off his usual form. The Cuban’s recovery in, the third set . was brilliant. He, however, had little , chance against Hopman’s slashing attack. The Australian finished the match m short order, Vollmer, was then playing indifferent' tennis.' Hopman’s strong back-hand and’ speedy court coverage were, moreover, hard to overcome. Vollmer made eight double faults in the match. The point score was Hopman 92 (of which 16 were placements),-Coll-mrf 83 (including 17 placements L

The Cubans throughout .the first, three sets were content to play from the baseline, and their persistent lobbing was not altogether ineffective. 'Crawford was brilliant in overhead smashes, and Hopman’s frequent angled shots at the net gained many points, but the Australians’ forced errors were numerous, permitting the Cubans twice to reach deuce in the third set before the former could force a decision. > The Cubans adopted a more forceful manner of , play in the fourth set, meeting the Australians in the forecourt- and at the net. It was a mistake, for there they were outplayed, Crawford particularly being deadly at the net. ■ The Australians’ speed quickly tired their opponents, who began to err. Hopman was a little erratic early in the concluding set, but he rallied quickly. Crawford was considerably troubled by asthma but played vigorously. Morales “starred” for the Cubans, making many placements. Vollmer’e best shots were forehand, drives with plenty of pace, which drove the Australians back many times.
