HARRIERS

ST. KILDA. The weekly run of the St. Kilda harriers was held from the School, a good attendance of members participating. The hares (L. Carter and L E. Still) were responsible for an excellent trail, which commenced from the school along Helensborough road for about 500 yards, when it turned across country,' emerging on the North Taieri road below Ashburn Hall. From here it went up the road and on to the Wbare Flat track past the water trough bn the new road. At this stage, heavy rain intermingled with hail began to fall. The trail turned to the left along a very greasy track across country, through dense bush and gorse skirting the plantation overlooking the Taieri Plains, eventually emerging again on the North. Taieri road about two miles south of the Sanatorium. From here the road was followed back, to the school. A fast run home was held from the entrance to the Whare Flat track, G. Aitken gaining first place, with A. J. Smith and C. Pope second and third respectively. Members are reminded that the Edmond Cup Trial next Saturday #ill be held from Duke street, where.they are required to meet at 2.15 p.m.

CIVIL SERVICE. '

The Civil Service Club held its annual One-mile Postal Cup Race at Forburv Park on a very heavy track. A field of 40 faced the starter (Mr H._ M'Kenzie). I', Andrews (190yds) set a solid pace over, the first half mile, with the limit men close up, the backraarkers (Barnes and M'Lachlan) moving very fast over the first half* Turning into the back straight Tracey (170yds) took command, closely followed by E. C, Brown (90yds), but. the backmarkers were right in the bunch, Barnes and M'Lachlan still being together. A quarter of a mile from home ■ Barne», who was running a great race, was almost up to the leaders. Turning into the' straight, Tracey still led from Brown, Barnes, Allen, and M'Keitch, but 100yds from the finish. Barnes put in a great sprint and won fairly easily, seven yards ahead of Brown, who went a good race, with Tracey five yards away third. Then came Allen (150yds). M'Keitch (120yds), and Ross (160yds). Result:-—.). G. Barnes (scr) X, E. C. Brown (90yds) 2, P. Tracey (170yds) 3. Time, 4mm 37 l-ssec. - —. DUNEDIN. The Dunedin Club held its Novice Race and also an open race at Forburv Park. From the start Sturgeon, one of the limit men. started to open up a gap on the rest of the field, and gradually widened it as the race progressed. Going down the back straight the placings were:—Sturgeon, Connell, and Weatherston, closely followed by the rest of the field. Coming up the straight Sturgeon, running well, headed the field in by about 40 yards, followed by Connell and M'Leod. Result of the novice race was: Sturgeon 1, Weatherston 2. The result of the open handicap was: Connell 1, M'Leod 2, Romerill 3. -CAVERSHAM. Caversham held its One-mile Maiden Handicap for the J- W. M'Stay Memorial Cup at Forbury Park, an excellent field of 39 facing the starter (Mr J. WHolley). Walker (95yds) and Donovan (60yds) began to move up from the start, and passing the post the first time the , order was Walker (95), Greenslade (100), Williams (BO), Butterfield and Templeton (95), and Donovan (00), with J. A. Robertson (scr) in the middle of the bunch. Donovan kept on, and, entering the straight, took the lead from Walker. The latter, however, challenged again, beating Donovan on the tape, with Robertson close .up third, followed by Knox (40yds) and Greenslade; Result: — C, W. Walker (95yds) 1, L. K. Donovan (60yds) 2, J. A. Robertson (scr) 3, Time, snnn 2sec. The remainder of the club then went for a run along Lovers’ lane to the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, where they visited the grave of their late club mate, J. W. M'Stay, and then went on to Anderson s Bay terminus, down \ into Taiuui, and by Queen’s drive back to Forbury ParkIn the run home Lorimer, Brown, Frye, and several others were prominent. OTAGO UNIVERSITY. Otago University Harriers had an excellent run from Morningtpn School at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Club Leader W- A. Stewart led the pack down into the valley and along to the tram -terminus and thence up Fraser’s Gully. Frtffn here a sweeping route of an intensely muddy nature was taken to the water race. A practice training run was held along the water race for a distance of about twq miles to the southern reservoir. A stiff run home wag held along the valley and up Kenmuir road and back to the school, i The placings were: —W. A. Stewart 1, ( W. M'Kechnie 2, F. H. Harris 3, with about a yard- between each man. |

CARGILL ROAD. , v The Cargill Road Methodist Harrier Club held its One-mile and a-half Novice Race on Saturday at Ross Creek reservoir, the course being three times round the larger of the two reservoirs. In the first lap J. Manly, the limit man, held his lead, with the back-markers gaming on the middle men. The second round saw the back men catch the middlemarkers, with J. Manly still in the lead, the field being well strung out. Halfway round the last lap A. Barclay and J; Wallace passed the limit man and made a willing finish, A. Barclay finishing barely a yard ahead of Wallace, with Manly a good third. The fastest time went to J. Wallace, with A. Barclay and N. Thomson second equal. «, ' ,• ANGLICAN. " ’ Anglican held its One Mile Novice Race for the Mouat Cup at Forbury Park. A field of 22 faced the starter (Mr C. C. Benzoni). H. Weir, took the jead from the start, closely followed by T. Pullar and A. Tyrrell. This order was maintained until the start of the second Jap, when lan Gare came to the front with a good turn of speed. On .entering the finishing straight ‘ Tyrell, Gare, Pullar, Grennau, Harris and Halligan were well bunched. About 50 yards from the tape Pullar drew away to win by five yards, with the same distance between second and third. Result: T. Pullar 1, GareJ2, Grennall 3. Time. smin 20eec. j The Sealed Handicap was won by G. M. Grennall. After the race the fast pack, under Deputy-captain C. R. Holmes, held a fast run from* Forbury to the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery and back, via Lover’s lane to St. Clair. In the,run home Holmes, Toiu•ton and Logan led in that order. The slow pack, under Captain C. C. Benzqm, followed the same course in preparation for the Two'Miles and a-half Race. Barron, M’Lean and Stuart showing up wed. MORNINGTON. An enjoyable but dirty run was held by 32 of the above club from the old Cavershara School. Rackley and Robson laid the trail, which followed the Main South road to Burnside, through ■ the yards, then climbed the hill to the Southern Reservoir. The water race was followed by fast and slow packs for about two miles,* when the fast pack went ahead, coming down to the main road at Abbotsford. From'there fast work was indulged in all the way home. Miller, Chirneide arid M'Lean were first. The slow pack was headed by Clelland, R. Brown and R. Martin. ST. PATRICK'S. The number of members who turned out for the run wag well up to the standard, 37 runners being preserit. The run was from the Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor at Anderson's Bay, and the pack, under the whistles of Captain Daly and Deputy-captain Ryan, ran by road to Highchi! Memorial, when, two packs were formed. The fast packMyuck out across country, and after encountering much hilly and bushy country again struck the road about the Highcliff School, from, where the run home started, J. Robqrtson and A. Byrne being,prominent. 'The slow pack, under Acting-captain R. Baughen, also struck across country, and after negotiating a few very slippery paddocks the road by Smaill’s farmhouse was reached, then along the road, through Tomahawk to the top of the hill by the cemetery. The run home commenced here, resulting in N. Hall, R. Baughen, and R. Carroll being prominent. it ' LEITH. Leith Club ran as guests of Bishop Richards from his residence, “Lis Escop,” H. Masters and J. Ward laid undoubtedly the best trail of- the season. The country traversed was of a varied nature, including plenty of mud, and the pace s throughout was very willing. Oyer 30 members turned out, and followed, the trail up the side of Woodhaugh quarry, along Roy’s Gully to the top end of Balmacewen golf links. From here a steep climb led to Wakari and a fast run v through the reserves plantation to Glen- 1 leith. After following Leith road for a short distance arid going through Thompson’s farm, some good cross-country was traversed, and a fast run home down Leith road concluded an enjoyable run.
