The oldest horse race in England is that of Kiplingcotcs —lately run over a four-mile course on the Yorkshire Wolds near Alarkct Dcighton. Inaugurated in 1519, the race is run annually the third Thursday in Alarch. The course; which is reputed to have been used for racing in the reign of Richard 111, passes through the parishes of Ettou Lund, Goodmanham, and Aliddloton-on-the Wolds, and finishes at a point above Londosborough Wold. The prize money, which amounts to about £B, is derived from a sum invested in Consols. The entrance fee of £4 for each horse must he paid to the clerk of the course near the winning post by 11 o'clock on the morning of the race.
