(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, May 14. PALMERSTON COLLIE CLUB. The final day of the Palmerston Collie Club’s trials was held on Saturday in cold weather. The following are the results:— OPEN HUNTAWAY. Points: Huntaway 10, command 12, slew 8, noise 10, total 40; time, lOrain. C. M'Erlane’s Romp, 94, 12, 7J, 94 38 i points, 1 (time, 3.47 min); A. T. Miller’s Jock, 9J, 11, 8, 9 —374 points, 2 (time, 3.57miu); F, M'Gregor’s Glen, 9, 11, 8, 9 —37 points, 3 (time G.Stnin); J. M'Gregor’s Mack, 84, 11, 8, 8^ —30 points, 4 (time, s.smin); M. A. Mntheson’s Ralley, 84, 10. 8,9 —35 J points, 5 (time, s.lomin). Judges’ remarks: Romp hunted sheep through first line of poles in good line, making good slew and going through second row of poles in good line; let sheep off the course a little between second and third poles; noise and command good. Jock hunted well through first and second poles in a good line, but went off the course a little in third poles. Glen took sheep through first poles in fair line and through second and third poles in good line; dog a little rash; noise good. MAIDEN HUNTAWAY. M. A. Matheson’s Ralley, 84, 10, 8, 9 354 points, 1 (time, S.lOmin); J, Trotter’s Mack, 74, 9. 8, 84—33 points, 2 (time, 4.57 min); W. Aubrey’s Dick, 6,6, 8, 7 27 points, 3 (time, 4.25 min); W. S. Thomson’s Roy, 5,8, 6, 5 —24 points, 4 (time, 7.54 min); J. M'Gregor’s Sweep, 5, 6,6, 5 —22 points, 5 (time, 6.3omin). Ralley hunted sheep through first and second poles in good line, and through third fairly well; dog was rather inclined to slew than hunt. Mack, sheep broke back for yards, but the dog recovered and went through first poles in good line; sheep went off the course before second poles, and dog was careless between second and third poles. Dick hunted through first poles in good line, but headed sheep twice before second poles; hunted through third poles in fair line. LOCAL HUNTAWAY. Round pole, bring back, and yard.— Points: Hunt 10, Command 10, Pole 3. Bringing Back 10. Yard Work 4, Yarding G. Hugh Ross’s Get, 8, 7. 3. G, 2, 6—32 points, I; B. Callaghan’s Meg, 8,6, 3, C, 2, 6—31 points, 2; D. Munro’s May, 6,7, 0, 8,3, 6—30 points. 3. Teachers’ Cup, valued at £5 ss, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, for the best musterer’s team of one header and two huntaways, was won by M. A. Matheson, of Middlemareh, with 1104 points. Mr A. Stewart’s £2 2s to the competitor with the highest aggregate at trials was won by John Anderson, of Kurow, with 2874 points. Mr John Philip’s trophy, valued at £2 2s, for most points Open Head, class 2, and Open Huntaway. with one dog in each event, was won by A. T. Miller, of Tuatapcre, with 82 points. Mrs D. Ross’s trophy, valued at £2 2s, to maiden dog scoring most points in Maiden Head, class 2, was won by G. P. Johnstpn, of Alma. Mrs J. Sheppard’s £1 Is, to dog doing cleanest head and lift in Open Hoad, class 2, was also won by G. P. Johnston, of Alma. Mrs J. Sheppard’s ft Is, to local dog showing best command in Huntaway, was won by Mr D. Ross, Palmerston. Mr J. Anderson's cup, valued at £5 ss, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, for local competitor gainging most points at trials, was won by D. Munro, Palmerston, with 141 points. Mrs D. Ross’s cup, valued at £5 ss, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, for winner of local event, was won by Hugh Ross, Palmerston. Mr W. Murray’s trophy, valued at 10s 6d, for local competitor with most entries and least prize money, was won by Peter Walker. Mrs D. Munro gave £2 2s to bo divided between second and third in the Maiden Head and Huntaway, to be added to the prize money. Mr W. M'Kcrrow presented £1 Is to be added to fourth prize in classes 1 and 3. Mr R. Jamieson gave 10s 6d to bo added to the fifth prize money in Open Head Classes 1 and 2: Mr G. Ross, £2 2s to bo divided as prize money in classes 1 and 3; Mr G. Philip, £1 Is to the competitor unplaced gaining most points in the two Open Heading events; Mr G. F. Galloway, £1 Is to competitor unplaced, scoring most points in Maiden arid Open Huntaway; Mr E. H. Clark, £2 2s towards the prize money in Maiden Head and Huntaway; Mr Hugh Ross, £1 Is towards prize money in the Open Head, class 1: Mr C. J. Scott, 10s Gd towards prize money in Local Head: Mr Alexander M Lend. £1 Is towards prize money in Open Huntaway; Mr R. Cameron, £1 Is lo prize money in Open Head, class 2; Messrs Arklo and Rolfe, £1 Is to prize money in Open Head, class 2; Mr W. J. Ross. £1 Is to prize money in local Huntaway; Mr A. Cochrane, £1 Is to prize money in the Maiden Heading, class 1. RUGBY FOOTBALL. At Palmerston on Saturday, the homo team defeated Macraes after a fast and exciting, although somewhat ragged game. Both sides played well considering the conditions, but Palmerston showed a little more finish than did Macraes. From (he start, Macraes attacked. Imt Palmerston drove (hem back. The ball from a scrum went to Herman, to Kitchen, to Gordon, to .Stewart, lo Murray, who just fell short of the line. Macraes were penalised and Parkhill kicked a good goal with a heavy ball. Faulty handling and speed in golfing up to their men by the Palmerston backs kept the Macraos’s rearguard from functioning. Palmerston were attacking when half time was called. On the resumption, after a little give-and-take play, Keenan secured and passed to Kitchen, to Gordon, who short-punted for Murray to dribble over for a good try. No attempt was made to convert the try. Palmerston again attacked and Keenan was hold tip in trying to go round the side of the scrum. Macraes wore again penalised, and Parkhill made the Palmerston total 9. Barber and M'Crosky were showing sound defence at this part of the game. Macraes came with a rush, and after a scramble Barber went over for a nice try. converting it hffnsclf. After some exciting play the whistle went with the score; Palmerston 9 points. Macraes 5 points. Mr Reardon, of Dunedin, controlled the game.
