(Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, May 12
Encouraging success has attended experiments which were carried out by the Gisborne Freezing Works last November by Dr W. A. Bowie. Reports received from England on the meat trade show that by a special process of bleeding and conditioning there has been a definite increase in palatability, and also that the bloom is retained, and that there is less loss of weight per carcass than when routing wag the procedure followed.
WELLINGTON, -May 12. Harry Clarence Berney, of Trentham, who was arrested at Lower Hutt last evening, was charged with the theft of a gold brooch, a wristlet watch, locket, earring, and a silver coin, the property of Walter Smart. He appeared at the Lower Hutt Court to-day, and was remanded to Wellington. The goods are alleged to have been taken from Smarts shop in Willis street on Tuesday, and were recovered by Detective M'Lennan in the bush at Trentham.
CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. Charged with the theft from the Post ami Telegraph Department at Christchruch of £lB3, Edward Joseph Robb, a clerk, aged 39,. was to-day remanded to May 17. The police said the accused had been in charge of the Stump Department at the Post Office, and was missing from work on Tuesday, when a shortage was found. He had made full confession.
