IMPROVED POSITION
BRITISH TRADE RETURNS (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 11. (Received May 12, at 5.5 p.m.) A substantial reduction in the value of imports accompanied by a marked increase in that of exports is shown in the April overseas trade returns. The value of imports in April totalled £53,227,000 compared with £61,119,000 in the preceding month, and £69,950,000 in March, 1931. Exports in April were valued at £34,782,000. In the previous month the total was £31,198,000, and in April last year £32,483,000. The excess of imports over exports in April was £13,804,000. In March the excess was £24,499,000, and in April of last year there was an excess of £30,878,000. As measured at the Board of Trade the average of wholesale prices in April showed on a balance a decline of 2.2 per cent, as compared-with March. The index numbers for the two months were 85.7 and 87.6 respectively. The tables are based on the index figure for 1930 equalling 100.
