MILTON, May 9, PERSONAL.

Forty years’ continuous service as a member of a school committee hag been established by Mr Peter Boyd, of Lovell's Flat, who did not seek re-election at the householders’ recent meeting. Mr Boyd was' first elected to Lovell’s Flat School Committee on April 25, 1892, and of the seven members elected on that date only two are now surviving—Messrs P. Boyd and H. Pink. Highly appreciative references to Mrs _ Honour a services as teacher at Southbridge were made by the chairman of the School Committee (Mr A. B. Stewart). She was presented with a Bruce reversible travelling rug and lady’s dressing case, whilst her little daughter Katrina was also presented with a'work basket. Mrs Moncur suitably responded. Within the past few weeks a trio of Milton relief workers have been engaged during “ stand-down ” week and other available days in gold prospecting in an out-of-the-way spit in the Table Hill district. Whilst engaged in this work on Friday afternoon, and working at the foot of a nine-foot face in an old riverbed. a slip occiirred and buried one of the men—John D. Wilson—up to .the waist in the falling clay, but his workmate managed to jump clear at the warning noise. Wilson was quickly extricated fjrom his, precarious position by his fel-low-workers. ■ Local relief workers were looking forward to the abolition of “stand-down” week, under the amended scale of rates proclaimed by the Unemployment Board. Surprise is therefore expressed at the intimation received from the board that the new arrangement is not applicable to Milton and district in the meantime. The local comnjittee is instructed to continue its operations on usual rates of relief pay (12s and 9s), with “ stand-down ” week.
