BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS

SOUTH OTAGO

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, May 9, RUGBY FOOTBALL.

The two matches played on the Show Ground at Balclutha yesterday drew only a small attendance. 1 The weather was ideal for football, being fine and mild, and the ground was in perfect order. The first match was that between Toko District High School and Clutba 111. The visitors had all the best of the game. In the first spell tries for Toko were scored by O’Shaugnessy (1) and Oliver (2), while Blair kicked a penalty goal for Clutba. Toko again drew first blood in the second spell, Olver scoring and Brown converting. Stewart for Clutba and Blair The final scores were made by Toko, M'Donald gained a try, which C. M'Kinney converted, and Brown scored an unconverted try, Toko thus winning by 22 to 8. Mr G. H. Mitchell was referee.

Waitahuna and Clutha II then took the field and an interesting gaipe ensued. Although playing only 14 men throughout, Waitahuna were much too good for their opponents, who lacked weight. Waitahuna at once attacked, and Delaney scored in the first few minutes. Clutha were forced repeatedly in the first spell, in which the visitors did all the scoring. Tries were gained by T. Cutler and A. Eaton, M. Crane converting the latter, while M. Crane also kicked a penalty goal. In the second spell the Reds showed up much better, and Moffat scored, but the kick at goal was resultless. The Reds attacked for a time, but at the finish Waitabuna were again on the attack. J. Crane scored a try, and the game ended with the scores; Waitahuna 17, Clutha 3. The Rev. F. J. Handy controlled the game. At the weekly meeting of the South Otago Sub-union the transfer of C. Anderson from the Hastings Club to Star was approved. It was decided that owing to the high schools being closed for the term holidays no official Third Grade matches be played next Saturday. Referees for next Saturday were appointed as follow: Valley v. Clinton, at Clinton, Mr W. Thomson; Star v. Clutha, at Balclutha, the Rev. F. J. Handy; Toko v. Crescent, at Kaitangata, Mr M. Whelan; Coast v. Toko, at Milton, Mr L. Penman; Union v. Waitahuna, at Waitabuna, Mr A. Ryan; Clutha II v. Waihola, at Waihola, Mr J. O’Connor.

A mistake occurred in the published fixtures for May 28, the match Star v. Crescent being set down for Kaitangata, •whereas it should have been Stirling. Other district games resulted as follow:—Senior: Owaka 12, Star 7; Crescent 23, Valley nil. GOLF.

The Men’s Medal Match, on the Balclutha links on Saturday, was won by W. Ewart with a net score of 80. T. M, Thompson (83) was runner-up.
