HARRIERS

The Civil Service run was held from the North-East Valley School, 44 members turning out. The paper was in the hands of J. 6. Barnes and M'Lennan, who laid a good trail, which led along the Main North_ road to Watt’s road and up the Pine Hill road. From there it ran across country, and eventually back to Watt’s road and home. The slow pack, under H. Hall, followed the trail, and in a fast run home Anderson was first frpm Oliver, Orange, B. Brown, and Vintiner. The fast pack went for a solid run up the Leith Valley road to the school, where it turned back for home. The pace over the last mile was a good test for the fit runners, Garbutt, Geddes, M'Lachlan, Kennedy, and M'Kernan finishing practically together. The Mile Maiden Race held on Miller Park by the Abbotsford Harriers proved a good race. Seven runners were despatched by Mr J. Lindsay, and at the end of the first lap J. Lindsay (95yds) was leading Mofiitt (30yds), Barnes and Kane (70yds), with Ryan (scr) gaining. With two laps to go, J. Napier ran into the lead, with Lindsay, Ryan, and Barnes in that order. Ryan passed Napier, but in the last lap Napier, who had taken the lead, drew away to win comfortably from Ryan, with J. Lindsay and Barnes in that order. Results:—J. Napier (50yds) 1, H. Ryan (scr) 2. J. Lindsay (95yds) 3. The non-competitors had a run from the Abbotsford Church, under Captain Fincham, who led the pack down across the Kaikorai Stream and across paddocks to the back of Geddes’s farm. Here the pack split up, the slow pack following M. Watson across the Brighton road and round the edge of the swamp. Thence the runners went past Valpy’s farm and home via the Brighton road. H. Moffitt headed the slow pack, while the fast pack finished with a sharp sprint. The Leith Club held a One-mile Maiden Race at Ross Creek Reservoir under ideal weather conditions. The track was in good order, and Mr W, O’Neil got the field of 19 away to a good start. The limit men set off at a fast pace, headed by D. Eckhoff (60yds). With half the distance covered A. Gumming (35yds), who had moved up very fast, could not maintain the pace, and was soon displaced by F. Palmer (40yd«). The backmarkers —D. M'Lean (20yds) and S. Dalton (30yds)—however, displayed good judgment, and gradually overtook the leaders, and on entering the straight the issue was in doubt, D. M'Lean, S. Dalton, and E. Milne (35yds) being in a bunch. The sprint home told, and Dalton breasted the tape by inches from M'Lean, with Milne six yards away third. Under ideal conditions the Dunedin Harrier Club held its weekly run fr o ™ the Mornington School. Under the whistle of Captain Romerill, the pack proceeded from the school to the Valley road by way of the Mill road. After following the road for some distance the pack ran cross-country to the Southern Reservoir, and thence to Green Island. From this point the Main road was followed to Lookout Point, and the trail led home by way of Mornington and Elgin road. In a fast run home P. Romerill, P. Stanley, and Sturgeon were prominent. The St, Patrick’s One-mile Maiden Handicap attracted a field of 18 runners. The course was from a point along the Lawyer’s Head road to the St. luma tram terminus. The starter (Mr M Gill) got the field away in good style. A good pace was set by the limit man, Porter, who kept his lead until passing the Tnhuna Park gates, when Lovelock (ssec) headed him. The field, however, was close up, and with a-quarter of a mile to go at least six or eight runners had a chance. Porter and Lovelock then drew away, and with 50 yards to go the latter had a slight lead. Porter, however, had more in reserve, and got up to beat Lovelock by two yards in a good finish. Ine following was the result:—P. Sorter (25sec) 1, G. Lovelock (ssec) 2, R. Carroll (16sec) 3. After the race the rest of the members held a run under the whistles of Captain Daly and Deputycaptain Ryan. . , The Anglican Harriers ran from tlie George Street School, some 50 members following an excellent trail, laid by Kockliff and Bennie. The fast pack, under the whistle of Deputy C. R. Holmes, and the slow pack, under Captain Benzoni, followed the paper up via Dalmore to Pine Hill, across to the top of Pine Hill road, then down the hill through good country to a point on the Leith Valley road above the school. From here the trail led up to the Ross Creek Reservoir, then down into Woodhangh road and back to the school. In a fast run home Logan, M'Dougall, and Taylor headed the fast pack, while Stuart, Gain, and 1 etit headed the slow pack. B. Provo (who has just returned from Southland), Halligan, Duncan, M'Lennan. and Harris in the fast pack, and Chrystall, Davidson, and Gate in tlie slow pack showed up prominently. The University Harrier Club held a ’paper chase from the St. Clair Baths on Saturday. J. B. Mackie and F. Harris took the paper and set off to lay a long trail from St. Clair to Green Island. The club leader, W. A, Stewart, who was in charge of the pack, decided after a short distance that the hares had gone into dangerous ground, and led off by a different route to the Green Island township. Here, by chance, the hares were discovered. A short excursion was made in the direction of Kaikorai, and then tlie pack returned across tlie St. Clair hills. In the run home the placings were as follow L. Bibby 1, W. M’Kccbnie 2, E. Hay 3
