DEATH OF A CHINAMAN. Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., held an inquiry at Outram Courthouse on Saturday into the death of Young Shew Wing, employed at a Chinese garden at Outram. The deceased was found hanging from the roof of a shed on Friday afternoon.
Young Yok, a resident of North Taieri, and manager of the market gardens at Outram, owned by Messrs S, Young and Co., said that Young Shew Wing was employed as a cook and a labourer. He had been so employed since March 10, 1030, He had been in New Zealand 10 or 12 years, and was about 30 years of age. His wife lived in Canton, China. There were two children. The deceased’s health had not been good of late. Young Hum, labourer at the market gardens, said lie had last seen the deceased alive at noon on the Friday, when they had dinner together. The deceased was in his usual spirits, but complained of not feeling well. On returning about 5.20 p.m., witness missed the deceased. He commenced a search, and found the deceased hanging from the roof of an outhouse. He called out to the other workmen, and Mr Thomas Ashley severed the rope. As far as could be seen there was no life in the body. A doctor and the police were telephoned for. Thomas Ashley, an employee at the market gardens, gave corroborative evidence.
Dr Wylie, resident medical practitioner at Outram, gave formal evidence.
The coroner said the evidence showed clearly that it was a case of suicide by hanging. He gave a verdict accordingly.
