ROADING OF THE SOUTHERN ENDOWMENT
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — In the issue of your paper this morning there is a report of the meeting of the Otago Harbour Board, at which a letter was received from Messrs Waters, Ritchie, Ltd., asking for the provision of road access to the rear of their premises on the Anderson’s Bay road. The board agreed to level therground, but the company is to provide and spread the metal. No wonder there is so little demand for Harbour Board leasehold land on Anderson’s Bay road, when the tenants are required to provide the access. The condition of things at the rear of the properties in this locality is a disgrace to the Harbour Board. At the present time the Southern Endowment is being filled in, and will soon be completed, but owing to the little-used railway line along the Anderson’s Bay road there will be no decent road access to it. At the present time Wharf street is being finished, and I would suggest that no railway line should extend beyond the junction of this street and the Bay road, and that the present line to Tahuna Park be and a street constructed in its place. If this were done all the Harbour Board land in the vicinity would be increased in value at least 50 per cent. This new road would take all the motor traffic off the Anderson’s Bay road,, and reference to the map of Dunedin will show that it would provide direct access to Musselburgh, Anderson’s Bay, and the Peninsula. Of course, the Kensington siding and the railway line to Tahuna Park would have to be discarded. The making of this new road would be of tremendous benefit to this part of the town, and would also provide useful work for the unemployed.—l am, etc., March 23. . P. W. Shacklock.
