RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE _ The fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last night. The president (Mr W. F. Forrester) was in the chair and there was a good attendance of members. The official canvasser (Mr H. C. Johnston) reported that, owing to pressure of private business, ho would be unable to continue as canvasser in the meantime. However, while he had been engaged in the work he had secured some very encouraging results, and had received many definite promises to join the association. If the association decided to appoint another man he would be only too willing to give any assistance he could, as he believed that from 70 to 80 new members could be enlisted,—The chairman thanked Mr Johnston for the work he had done for the association, and Mr P. S. Anderson extended the thanks of the chair for his assistance to that body. Thirty-six nominations for membership were received and accepted, four transfers inward were granted and three outward, and one death was reported.

Various matters in connection with the Anzac Day service were discussed, and arrangements were made regarding the parade and the service at the memorial. It was reported that the figures of the membership campaign at present stood as follows:—Christchurch 1883, Dunedin 1832.

Mr H. L. Paterson reported that a meeting of ladies had been held in connection with Poppy Day, and that arrangements had been made for the canvassing of the whole of the district. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the association on April 18. An invitation was received from the Rev. D. C. Herron for the association to attend the evening service at Knox Church on Sunday, April 24, on which day the churches would commemorate Anzac Day. The Rev. Walter Maclean, of Oamaru, would be the preacher.—lt was decided to write thanking Mr Herron for the invitation, and state that it would be placed before the annual meeting of the association.
