LAND SPEED RECORDS

“WIZARD” SMITH’S PLANS SUCCESSFUL TRIAL RUN (Per United Press Association.) NINETY-MILE BEACH, February 24. The Enterprise appeared for the third time on Ninety-mile Beach to-day, Avheu “ Wizard ” Smith made a trial run of about four miles. The car attained a speed of about 125 miles an hour, according to Mr Smith, avlio Avas pleased with his- run. The road tyres have not been changed, as Mr Smith does not wish to risk cutting his racing tyres on the toheroa shells, Avhich arc still thick in places. Mr Smith ran in only one direction, and on his return expressed satisfaction Avith the Enterprise’s performance and said that the five-mile record was a certainty. He hazarded the opinion that on the five-mile run he Avould probably attain a speed of over 245 miles an hour, and thus automatically break the land speed record. The beach Avas improving, and he Avas looking fonvard to to-morroAV, Avhen, after the king tide he had every hope of attacking the fivemile record.

The third track sAvitch was fully tested to-day and the three Avireless telephones, which proved to be in working order. With the third SAvitch right Mr Smith intends to attack the 10 kilometre record Avhen he does his five-mile dash.
