BROADSIDING

HULL WINS BIG EVENT NESBIT RIDES WELL About 2000 people were present at the Speedwty Royal last night to sec the fourth meeting of the year. Although the track was decidedly rough and heavy some remarkably fast times wcie recorded. Tompkins and Hull, the English rider from Monica Park, showing out in wonderful bursts of speed. The big event of the night was won by Hull by one point from Tompkins, who was unfortunate jn being -compelled to withdraw in one heat of the Big Three Points Race as the result of being blinded by cinders. The latter was in great form in the other two heats, winning each in the splendid time of 85 i-ssec.

The outstanding local rider was Nesbit, who won the Royle Handicap, secured two first placings in the inter-track contest, and was third, in the final of the Mosgiel Handicap. Crighton .also showed great improvement, being very steady on the bends when others were finding difficulty in holding their machines on the course. He succeeded in carrying off the Mosgiel Handicap, a particularly fine feat for a rider of his experience. As a general rule the _ finishes wee rather unexciting, there being too much “ procession ” riding throughout the evening. The following are the results:— MOSGIEL HANDICAP.

First Heat.—L. Homer, 4sec, 1; A. Bain, lOsee, 2; Tommy Tompkins, scr., 3. Also started: “Ginger” Inglis 9sec. Inglia passed Bain in the second heat, but ids machine petered out in the third. Homer took the lead towards the end of the same lap, and the order till the end was Homer, Bain, Tompkins, Homer finishing 40 yards ahead of Bain, with Tompkins 50 yards further back. Time, 94 3-ssec. Second Heat. —J. Nesbit, 3sec, 1; J. Young, ssec, 2; Wally Hull, scr., 3. Also started; B. Hennig 9sec. Young passed Hennig in the second lap, Nesbit riding into second place a moment later. In the third lap Nesbit took the lead from Young, while Hull, whose goggles had slipped, rode past Hennig. There was no alteration in the order, Nesbit passing the post CO yards to the good. Hull made a big effort to bent Young, but was 15 yards beliind as they finished. Time, 94 l-ssec. Third Heat. —P. Lyders, 4sec, 1; “Shorty” Wicks, lsec, 2; S. Ravenswood, Bsec, 3. Also started: Laurie Packer scr. The first three laps saw “ procession ” riding, Ravenswood leading from Lyders, Wicks, and Packer in that order. In the last lap Lyders, and then Wicks, passed Ravenswood, the first-named riding home 10 yards to the good, with Ravenswood 15 yards behind. Time, 91 3-ssec. Fourth Heat. —A. Crighton, ssec, 1; Eric Pyke, 4sec, 2; J. Chalmers, lOsec, 3. This was a very poor race. Chalmers, a new-comer to the track, took, things very quietly, leaving the race to Crichton and Pyke. Crighton eventually won by 180 yards, with Chalmers a long way back. Time, 93s>ec. Final. Crighton' 1 Lyders .. .. 2 Nesbit 6 Also started: Homer. Homer’s machine petered out in the second lap. Crighton made a good race, and held the lead _ throughout, Lyders clinging closely to his heels, with Nesbit well back. Another “ procession ” race saw Crighton win by 10 yards, Nesbit being 60 yards away. Time, 93 l-ssec. BIG THREE POINTS RACE. First Heat—Wally Hull (England), 1; Laurie Packer (Adelaide), 2. Also started: Tommp Tompkins (Brisbane). Tompkins was the first out from the bend, but Packer was hard on his heels, and rode into the lead a little later in the same lap. Tomkins in the next lap had to pull out with cinders in his eyes. Packer and Hull staged a great duel, Hull taking the lead at the end of the third lap. He held his own despite repeated challenges by Packer, and won by 25 yards. Time, 80 3-ssec. Second Heat.—Tompkins 1, Hull 2, Packer 3. Fought out at tremendous pace, the race created great excitement. Tompkins roared into the first bend and came out in front on the inside with Packer on his heels, and Hull last. Tompkins rode a great race, cornering very steadily despite his speed. The order was'unchanged until the last lap when Hull passed Packer, who was having machine trouble. Tompkins had an unassailable lead, and won by 60 yards, with Packer well back. Time, 85 l-ssec.

Third Heat.—Tompkins 1, Hull 2, Packer 3. The pace was the only remarkable thing about this heat. Tompkins took the lead from the start, and was never headed, being by Hull and Packer in that order. This was the state right through, Tompkins winning by 50 yards with 15 yards between second and third. Time 85 l-ssec. The final points were: Hull 11 points, Tompkins 10 points, Packer 5 points. INTER-TRACK CONTEST. First Heat.—“ Shorty ” Wicks (Monica Park) L P. Lyders (Speedway Royle) 2, J. Nesbit (Speedway Royle) 3. Eric Pykc, of Monica Park, failed to get going. Wicks shot into the corner first, and came out with a fair lead. On the next bend Nesbit challenged desperately, but Wicks held him off, and the order was Wicks, Nesbit, and Lyders until the last lap, when Lyders passed Nesbit. Wicks rode home 40 yards to the good with a length between second and third. Time, 86 2-ssee. Second Heat. —Nesbit 1. Also started: Wicks and Lyders. Lyders took the lead from the start, but Wicks came in on the inside at the second bend, and rode into the lead. His - machine, however, petered out, leaving Lyders and Nesbit to ride alone. Lyders, who was riding very well, was in front until the last bend, where he came to grief, leaving Nesbit to finish on his own. Time 91sec.

Third heat.—Nesbit 1, Lyders 2, Pyke 3. Also started: Wicks. Wicks'was the first to show out, but Nesbit passed him before the lap was finished. In the next lap Wicks pulled out with a broken chain, and from theh on the issue was never in doubt, Ncsjbit riding well to finish with a lead of CO yards. Lyders was too good for Pyke, and was 50 yards ahead as he passed the post. Time. 89 3-ssee. With 18 points to Monica Park’s 7, the Speedway Royle easily won the contest. ROYLE HANDICAP. First Heat.—A. Crighton, 4sec, 1; B. Hennig, 9sec, 2. Also started: Wally Hull, Isoc; L. Homer, 4sec. Crighton passed Hennig in the second lap, and Homer rode into second place a moment later, Hull pulling out at the same time. Crighton was never headed, and it seemed that Homer was sure of second place when on the last bend his machine petered out, leaving Crighton to finish 200 yards ahead of Hennig. Time, 91 4-ssec. Second Heat.—J. Nisbet, 3sec, 1; Laurie Packer, Isee, 2. Also started: "Ginger’’ Inglis, 9sec. Nesbit took the lead in the second lap. and Packer came into second place in the third. The race between the other two produced roars of laughter from the crowd. Ravenswood had opened up a huge lead from Chalmers, who again look things steadily. At the last turn, however, the former came off, leaving Chalmers to continue serenely on his way. Ravenswood was not to be denied so easily, and, picking up his machine, he remounted and beat Chalmers by the barest of margins, to the great merriment of the crowd. Time, ]3osec.
