OUTRAGE IN MELBOURNE. BOMB EXPLODED ON VERANDA. MELBOURNE, January 12. A bomb placed on the front verqnda of the home of Mr Adolph Jacobsen exploded and shattered the whole front of the house. Mr Jacobsen was cut about the face and head. He considers that it was a deliberate attempt on his life, and asserts that only a miracle saved him. He had previously received a warning. TRANSPORT ACCIDENTS. NEW SOUTH WALES STATISTICS. SYDNEY, January 12. Transport accidcuits caused 310 fatalities during 1931 in New South Wales, compared with 358 last year. People injured in motor smashes totalled 5025. , RURAL BANK FIXED DEPOSITS. RATES TO BE INCREASED. SYDNEY, January 12. Mr Riddle, Governor of the Commonwealth Bank, announced that the ilural Bank fixed deposits, which had been capitalised at 3 per cent., would be reconverted to fixed deposits at increased rates. Ten per cent, had already been made available for withdrawal, and of the remaining balance half would be converted into fixed deposits for 12 months, bearing interest at 3J per cent., and the other half into fixed deposits for two years at 4 per cent. “ORDER OF SILENT KNIGHTS.” MELBOURNE ORGANISATION. MELBOURNE, January 12. (Received Jan. 12, at 9 p.m.) An organisation styled “ the order of silent knights” has announced itself in Melbourne. Its objects are similar to those of the New Guard of New South Wales. It has been in existence for 12 months, but has refrained from making a public announcement until it cleared up questions regarding its legality. Its present strength is 2000. It is not affiliated with the New Guard.
