TOO MUCH WINE

NEW PROBLEM FOR FRANCE LONDON, December 30. It may be that tastes change; it may well be that England, France’s best customer, cannot afford to buy her wines, especially with the import duties increased. What is certain is that France does not know what to do with her wine. So enormous is the quantity of wine in France, says the Paris correspondent of the Daily Mail, that growers are constructing extra cement storing vats. At the present time there are no fewer than 1,003,000,000 gallons of wine in stock, but barrels enough for only onethird of the quantity. Wine merchants, to liquidate their stocks, are reducing prices and giving barrels free, instead of charging 8s to 10s, as has been their practice since the war.
