Bible classes and wireless are fast replacing dinking bouts as the entertainment of the “ hard-bitten ” members of the French Foreign Legion, says a message from Sidi-bel-Abbes, in Algeria. Where once stood the very “wet” canteen of the Sidi-bel-Abbes garrison a welfare hut has arisen. Many of the legionaries now spend their nights in the hut listening’ to the wireless. The drinking capacity of the Legion has dropped tremendously, chiefly because of economic factors. The men of the romantic fighting force now draw about a day, but wine costs from fid to 7-Id a quart —and a quart of wine was a mere mouth-wash for a genuine legionary of the older type. Profanity is also on the decline, but fighting abilities are said to have been little affected. The sergeant-major sees to that.
