VANCOUVER, August 3. - A message from East Hampton (New York) states that at the Maidstone inTitation tournament Penelope' Anderson (Virginia), in the first round, defeated Mrs Eileen Bennett Whittingstall (England), 6—4, 6—3. Mrs Dorothy Shepherd (England), who got a bye in the first round, defeated Miss Alice Marble (San Francisco), 6—3, 6—4, in the second round, and Miss Josephine Cruickshank (California), 7 —5, 3—6, 6—3, in the third round to reach the semi-finals. * SEMI-FINALS PLAYED. MRS SHEPHERD WINS AGAIN. VANCOUVER, August 3. In the semi-finals to-day Mrs Shepherd defeated Mary Greet (Kansas City), 4 —6, 6—3, o—2;0 —2; Mrs John Van Ryn defeated Mrs Marion Zinderstein Jessup (Wilmington, Delaware), 6—4, 10—8. In the doubles Misses Phyllis Mudford and Betty Nuthall entered the final by defeating Miss Alice Marble and Dorothy Weisel (Sacramento), 6—l, 6—3. They will meet Miss Marjorie Morrill and Mrs Jessup. THE WIGHTMAN CUP. AMERICAN TEAM CHOSEN. NEW YORK, August 4. (Received August 4, at 10 p.m.) -The United States Lawn Tennis Association has selected the following players to contest the Wightman Cup: Mrs Helen Wills Moody, Miss Helen Jacobs, Mrs' Harper, Mrs Jessup, Miss Marjorie Morrill, and Mrs Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman, who will captain the team. , ' ; * SEMI-FINALISTS IN DOUBLES. NEW FORK, August 3. (Received August 4, at 9 p.m.) In the doubles two English combinations—Misses Betty Nuthall and Phyllis Mudford and Mrs Whittingstall and Miss Dorothy Round—reached the semi-finals, together with two American pairs—Mrs Jessup and Miss Marjorie Morrill and Misses Penelope Anderson and Mary Greef.
