LOCAL CONDITIONS SOUTH ROAD STILL BLOCKED. After the very cold conditions which prevailed yesterday the indications were much more promising last night. During the 24 hours ended at midnight the barometer rose steadily and was standing at 30.00 at the end of that period. The strong south-west wind which has prevailed for the past two or three days fell considerably, but it was still very cold. The secretary of the Otago Motor Club- received advice yesterday morning that there was a foot of water covering the main south road at Waipahi, and that no motor traffic was able to get through. Later advice stated that the flood had subsided, but the was still blocked at M-‘Nab. The OutramDeep Stream-Middlemarch road was still blocked late yesterday afternoon. STORM AT CROMWELL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, August 4, Since just after midnight on Monday the district has been swept by a severe storm. A heavy south-west gale raged, and with it snow and sleet enveloped the mountains in ail directions. Just after daylight the gale abated somewhat, but the conditions are still unsettled and decidedly wintry. The hills are covered with a coating of snow right down to the flats. REPORTS FROM NORTHERN CENTRES. - (Special to Dailt Times.) AUCKLAND, August 4. The strong westerly wind continues, and occasional rain showers are being experienced, there was a further rise in the barometer, which now registers SO.OOin. WELLINGTON, August 4.; The weather was fine in the early morning but towards noon the wind turned to the south and rain commehccd to fall. About 2 o’clock the weather again cleared and the'remainder of the day was fine. CHRISTCHURCH, August 4.

Though it was fine to-day a cold south-west gale made the conditions unpleasant. There was a smatter of rain and a skiff of snow early in the morning. The maximum temperature was 47deg. The barometer is rising fast, the reading to-night being 29.87 in.
