RAVENSBOURNE AMENITIES SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Ravensbourne Amenities Society, to be presented at the annual meeting to-morrow, stales, inter alia, that innnediately after last year’s annual meeting an early start was made to canvass the district tor sun scriptions, and, notwithstanding f* lo that unemployment was malting used felt the contributions came in better than was expected. The amount collected, combined with the balance from the previous year and the subsidj from the Poppy Day Fund, enabled the committee to continue operations in the various streets under its control Unfortunately as the year advanced unemployment increased, and a number of men, residents of the district, were engaged under No. 5 scheme, in working on the various plots While the shrubberies have undoubtedly been improved by their efforts, it is to be regretted that so many residents of the district have been unable to obtain work at their ordinary occupations. During the last six years the society has been indebted to a Ladies’ Committee for selling poppies on Poppy Day. Mrs C. Thomlinson and her willing helpers were again in charge and sold poppies to the value of £l6, The sum of Vl 10s was spent in purchasing shrubs, the major portion of which were planted in De Lacy street, while the remainder were planted in Bishop street. The funds of the society were expended principally in wages, which amounted to £l7 15s 3d, an amount considerably less than that for last year. The members’ subscriptions came to £9 3s, and there is a balance of £1 8s lid in the bank.
