WEEKLY MEETING The weekly meeting of the committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Mr H. Harris occupied the A letter was received from the Alhambra Club appealing against Ravensbourne for playing a Fourth Grade player who was over age.—Mr E. Bagley said that the Ravensbourne Club admitted that an over-age player had taken part in the game.—lt wae decided to obtain an official explanation from the Ravensbourne Club. , Permission was granted the Otago Boys High School to send a junior team to 1 almerston to play a match against a team from the Palmerston High School on Saturday, August 8. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE MATCH.
Mr J. Richardson, secretary of the Southland Union, wrote asking if the Otago Union would be prepared to play a junior representative team against a Southland junior representative team as a curtain-raiser to the match between Otago and Southland at Dunedin on September 19. ... .. The chairman said he thought the request should receive very careful consideration, and they should stipulate, if they agreed to it, that the match should not be considered as an annual affair. It seemed to him that they were having a good deal of touring just now, and he doubted whether they should enter into any further engagements. Mr D. A. Jolly moved —“That this union is agreeable to the match as a cur-tain-raiser, provided that it is not taken as a precedent for an annual fixture.' Mr I. Grant moved as an amendment that a sub-committee be appointed to consider the matter. The amendment w r as lost. Mr Douglas Spedding moved as a further amendment that the Southland Union be advised that the Otago Union cannot see its way to accept the suggestion. , This amendment was also lost, and the motion was carried. KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION. The secretary reported that there was an entry from each of the senior teams for the Knock-out Competition to be played on August 15, August 29, and September 5. The chairman said it was very gratifying to know that the clubs had responded to the invitation from the committee. There had been some doubt whether the teams would care to go on playing this season, but the entries showed that players Were anxious to compete. The competition would help to keep their players in form for the North Otago match. It was decided to refer the arranging of the details to the sub-committee already set up, in conjunction with the Flag Committee. OTAGO v. WAIRAEAPA. A letter was received from the Wairarapa team accepting Mr Fleury as the referee for the match against Otago on Saturday. RANFURLY SHIELD. It was decided to enter a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield if Wellington is still holding it when Otago plays the northern province, PAYNE SHIELD MATCH. Mr V. G. Cavanagh was appointed manager of the University team which is to travel to Christchurch to play Menvale on August 15 for the Payne Shield. The team will leave on the Friday morning and return by the night express on Sunday. WHAT CONSTITUTES A MARK. Mr A. Haub said that other unions were ruling in accordance with the rule laid down by the English Union as to wnat constituted a mark—that was, that a player must have two feet on the ground when he takes the ball and make a mark with a heel on the ground. They were, however, ruling differently in Dunedin. The chairman said that he was notsuie that they had received any official instruction from the New Zealand Union m regard to the matter. , . Mr Grant said that he understood, that players in the north were not claiming a mark to any extent, as referees would not give them. , It was pointed out that a man could not jump in the air, take the ball, and then make the mark when he came to the discussion took place on the matter, and it was decided to .write to the New Zealand Union and .ask if it had given any ruling on the point. GATE RECEIPTS. The secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) reported that the gate receipts from the matches at Cansbrook on Saturday— Charity Saturday—came to £338 Is lOd. The receipts from the match on ihursday totalled £29 17s 6d. OTAGO v. WAIRARAPA The Otago selectors (Dr Perry and Mr D. M.
