UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—-I noticed a letter in Thursday’* Daily Times from “ A Struggling Housewife ” commenting on country people pass* > ing over the poor in. their own towns to help the poor in Dunedin. I, too, \ have noticed thie. and I agree with A Struggling Housewife ” that charity begins at home; In these hard times I .thins the farming community of any district does its share if it looks after its own poor. In every country township there is a percentage of unemployed and other poor, and these are the people whom the farmers should help. Next to the unemployed and other necessitous cases, the farmers themselves are in need of help. In fact, if thie depression continues tor long the majority of farmers are going to be in a bad way. If the wealthy people in our big cities want the farmers to help with produce, let them club together and pay the farmers for their products*, and so give the farmers a helping hand along with the rest. - , _ No doubt there is an odd farmer hers and there who could help without feeling the “pinch.” If so, let him. do it dividually, but I am- sure there is enough wealth in . Dunedin or any other big city to keep the poor of that citjr u the. residents would be as' liberal with tpeir, cash and goods as they seem to' expect ■ the country people to.be.—l am, etc^_ A Farmers wife** Ranfurly, July 10,
