ST. PAUL’S YOUNG PEOPLE’S SOC2TY . -
At the meeting of the St. Paul's Young People’s Society on Saturday evening the senior Young Men's team was defeated at basket ball by the Sunday School Young Men’s team, which was in turn defeated by the senior Young Women’s team. The (James Cup thus went to the latter team for a fortnight. A mock court was the chief item on the programme, the principals being Messrs A. Curie (judge). G. M. Miller (prosecuting counsel), D. A. Muirhead (defending counsel), and D. Sparks (clerk of the court). Both participants, and spectators entered into the spirit of the occasion, and the cases tried gave rise to much merriment and enjoyment. WAITAKI RUGBY SUB-UNION There was a full attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki Rugby Sub-union, Mr Turnbull, occupyiug the chair. Referring to the Town v. Country game, Mr Turnbull commented on the excellent manner in which the players had conducted Themselves, and suggested that a letter be sent thanking the North Otago Rugby Union for the hospitality extended to the country players and members of the sub-union. 'Mr’Hedley spoke in similar terms of the players on the occasion of the Waimate v. Waitaki ■ match, and suggested that a letter of thanks be sent to the Waimate Sub-union acknowledging the hospitality received. —The suggestions were adopted. ' The secretary read Mr MTnnes’s letter explaining the circumstances of the default of the Awakino team to Kurow last season. Mr M'lnnes and Mr Don spoke explaining the incident from their respective points of view.—lt was resolved, after hearing the explanation of Mr MTnnes and Mr Don’s reply, that the matter be dropped. Letters were received from the Otiake Club' intimating that the club had withdrawn from the competition for the season. and farther that the club had decided to declare itself defunct.—lt was resolved that the Otiake players be not allowed to play for any other club until a ruling on the matter had been received from the North Otago Rugby Union. The secretary .was instructed to communicate with, the secretary of the union concerning the position of players of a club which becomes defunct during a playing season, and inquiring also as to the status of the delegates of such club to the sub-union. The secretary was instructed to write to the union suggesting August 8, 15, or 22 as dates for the Town v.. Country return match. < It was decided to play the return Town tv Country fixture at Kurow, and to hold a. seven-a-side tournament at Duntroon. The secretary was instructed to write to the Tokarahi Club in reference to the shortness of the flag sticks. OAMARU BOXING ASSOCIATION At a meeting of the Oamaru Boxing Association, Mr G. M'Leod presided over a large attendance of members. The secretary reported that large entries had been received for the forthcoming tournament to be held on- July 22. It was decided to match T.. Croft (Greymouth) against C. Linden (Waitaki Hydro) in a six-round bout. : The following officials were appointed:—Referee, Mr T. Nightingale; judges—Messrs J. Simpson and H. Nightingale; official seconds—Messrs 0. R. Wise and J. Webb; announcer, Mr J. Stevenson; competitor stewards—Messrs - D. Campbell and W. Currie; weighing stewards —Messrs W. Kinder and D. Collins. The New Zealand Boxing Council advised that the New Zealand championships would be held at Ashburton on August 5 and 6, and asked for nominations for the positions of referee or judge. It was decided to forward the name of Mr T. Nightingale for either position. It was also decided to select the North Otago team for the championship gathering after the forthcoming tournament.
ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT.
HAMPDEN WOMEN’S DIVISION
The monthly meeting of the Hampden branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Public Hall, Hampden, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Le Fevre presided. A lecture and demonstration on “Making a Dress Form ” was given by Misses Crow and M'Millan of the Horae Science Department of* the Otago University. Mrs Lester acted as model, and the president returned thanks to the lecturers for their address. Mrs G. Newlands of the newlyformed Maheno branch returned ‘ thanks to the Hampden ladies for the enjoyable afternoon given to the Maheno visitors, and a dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. COURSING The coursing meeting on Saturday again proved a popular attraction to the public, large numbers witnessing the contest for the ladies’ bracelet, including a number of visitors from Dunedin. The various courses provided exciting contests, and the final between Trampfast and Overland Blue aroused keen interest amongst; the spectators. The results were as follow: First Round, Flash beat Golden Girl. Overland Blue beat Royal Saxon. St. Kevin beat Night Lad. Seaplane beat Rialto. Miss Lila beat High Speed. Quissie beat Lady Disdain. PICTURES “ The Great Meadow ” gives Miss Eleanor Boardman a real chance to show her ability as the sweetheart of an ambitious young farmer of Old Virginia, who weds him in romantic circumstances on the eve of a great trek to Kentucky, where they plan to “make house,” rear a family, and leave comfort and plenty behind them for. their children’s children. Drama and comedy, life and death, sinew and soul are all merged in this beautifully photographed picture. Some of the scenes can hardly ever be effaced from memory, and make one proud to realise that our forefathers must have been just like that. John Mack Brown appears opposite. Miss Boardman, and Gavin Gordon, who. will be remembered for his part in Greta Garbo’s “Romance,” is also prominently cast. It comes to the Majestic Theatre to-night and to-morrow. The short features are of excellent quality and include an Australasian Sound Gazette. LADIES’ HOCKEY The following are the results of the competition games in connection with the North Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association: Seniors: Pirata 7 beat Enfield nil, Arawa 4 beat Maheno 2. Juniors: Pirata B 2 beat Pirata G nil, Athletic B 2 ■ beat Arawa 1, UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE v A meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held yesterday morning, the Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester) presiding. Circulars were received from the Unemployment Board advising that limited funds have now been made available for No. 4a scheme, and from the Milton Unemployment Committee protesting against the expenditure of money bn roads leading to tourist resorts. —Received. Eleven applications were approved as follow: Alma, one man for four weeks, wages £2 15s a week; Enfield, one man until end August, 12s 6d a week; Georgetown, one man end August, 5s a week; Redcastle, one man for four weeks, £1 10s a week; Kia Ora, one man six weeks, 10s a week; Kokoamo, one man end August, 10s a week; Enfield, one man end August, £1 £s a week; Enfield, one man for four weeks, £1 5s a week; Waitaki, one man for six weeks,'ss a week; Maerewhenua, one man end August, 2s 6d a week; Weston, one man for four weeks, £1 a week. An application under No. 5 scheme from the Otepopo School Committee for two men was granted. Extensions of time were granted to applicants from Airedale and Kauroo Hill. MEN’S HOCKEY Colts secured their second win of the season by defeating Rovers by two goals to one, after a closely-contested game. Rovers had the better of the game in the second half, but were unable to put the finishing touches to the attacking movements. The Colts’ forwards were superior to their opponents in the second spell, and were mainly responsible for their win. Messrs A. C. Kay and J. Forbes were the referees. BASKET BALL A ladies’ basket ball match was played between the Totara and Manchester Unity Lodge teams at the South School on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Totara by 8 points to 6. The teams were fairly evenly matched, and a close game resulted Migs R. M. Doak controlled the game. COURT PRIDE OF OAMARU There was a large gathering of members at the quarterly meeting of the Court Pride of Oamaru, A.O.F. The meeting was opened in mourning as a mark of respect to the memory of the late. Bros. Jardine and Jamieson. Sick allowances amounting to £SO 15s were passed for pay ment, making a total of £242 5s for the six months. The following committees were formed in connection with the next annual district meeting:—Finance—the secretary treasurer, and P.C.R.P. Bros. Turvey. Cross and Borwich; Entertainment—the sitting officers and P.C.R.S. Bros. Brown. West, and V. E. Doran. Accounts amounting to £221 8s Hd were passed for payment. One candidate was initiated into the Order. The Foresters’ tribute to the members who lost their lives in the Great War was rendered by the C.E. POULTRY SHOW AWARDS The awards for the cups won at the Oamaru Poultry Show were made available yesterday, as follow:—Society’s cup for bantams, L. E. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING A triangular match was fired between the Awamoko, Weston, and Oamaru Clubs, and resulted in, a win for Awamoko by seven points from Weston, with Oamaru third. Dr Elsjieth Fitzgerald suffered a severely twisted ankle on Saturday as the result of falling heavily while skating on ice at a country homestead. ARAWA HOCKEY DANCE There was a large gathering at a dance held by the Arawa Ladies’ Hockey Club in Lyric Hall. The floor was in excellent order and the dancing was thoroughly enjoyed by those present. A novelty waltz competition was won by Mr.B. APRandle and partner. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr A, L. Familton, and M'Combe’s novelty dance band supplied good music. RELIEF WORK The following work was carried out under No. 5 scheme last week:— Borough Council. —Trees on reserve E, 5 men, wages £7 19s; forming and trimming roads and footpaths, 65 men, wages £lls 10s 3d. Returned Soldiers. —Subsidy work in gardens, 4 men, wages £ll 11s Bd. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND The acting town clerk (Mr J. Braithwaite) has received £7 16s from Mr J. D. Rutherford (Duntroon), representing contributions to the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Relief Fund by residents to Mrs Miles’s list. I -' ' ' ' ■ 1 ' THE LATE MR M’CONE The funeral of Mr James M'Cone took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by resident from Hakataramea to Kartigi, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held by those who had known him best. The Rev. Mr Taylor (Duntroon) conducted impressive services at the residence and the graveside, and a Masonic service was also conducted by Mr T. Little. Many floral tributes and messages of condolence were received' from numerous friends of the deceased. NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Air J. Crowley presided. The South Canterbury Union confirmed August 29 for the senior and junior representative fixtures at Timaru. —Received. Quinn to the Rugby code had been granted.—Received. Air F. Alilner forwarded £5 5s as pay ment for boys’ season tickets. —Received It was decided to grant £5 5s to the Referees’ Association. Transfers were granted as follow: —11 Dyson, from Athletic Third to Fourth Grade; R. Gleeson, W. Irving, Excelsior senior to junior. D. S. Loder advised that owing to an ankle injury he was unable to play in representative matches.—Referred to the selector. It was decided to write to the Waitaki Boys’ High School requesting that no practice games played on the Oval in the meantime owing to the state of the ground. , • ~ The secretary was directed to write asking the Referees’ Association to submit the names of the referees available for the South Canterbury-North Otago match. It was decided to request Air D. b. Loder to act with Mr Martin in coaching the representative team. Air W. Atkinson was appointed manager of the senior representative team, and Mr J. Palmer of the junior. Air C. J. Mollison reported on the match at Kurow between Hydro and Alaheno, commenting that the ground was not in a good state, but that the game had been played in an excellent spirit, and the spectators enjoyed a good exhibition. , ~ , The resignation of Air J. AlTvay, as a member of the Alanagement Committee was received on account of the action of the Union and Alaheno Clubs playing a senior game at the Show Grounds on July 4. Air G. B. Stevenson stated that tne game was accepted from Shag Point, and allotted to Maheno, which had a bye on that date, and Alaheno had the right to play on the Oval. The advertisement of the Maheno Chib was an intimation to its own club and supporters, and was not contrary to the desire of the union to assist the jockey club. The chairman commented that a mountain had b?(m made out of a molehill. He did not think the jockey club thought the Rugby Union had gone back on its word to stage a counter-attraction. The resignation of Air AI Kay was accepted with regret. Two nominations for the vacancy on the Alanagement Committee caused by the death of Air Jardine were received from Alessrs D. Burns and R. E. Dimick.—lt was decided, in view of the further vacancy on the committee, to defer the nominations to the next meeting. The following players were selected to train for the representative junior taam to play South . Canterbury:—Watson. Davis, Allen, Yui'll (Alaheno), Gleeson, APKer.dry, Irvine (Excelsior).
