MODERN TORTURE
WOMEN’S SLIMMING TRIALS LONDON, June 11. A refined torture chamber has appeared in Mayfair, says Lady Patricia Ward, writing in the Daily Mail aitet a visit to the latest slimming parlour. Here she changed into a bathing dress in a luxurious cubicle, and entered a huge room filled with every conceivable gymnastic gadget, on which many were concentrating, while many were lying on mattr°sses jerking their arms and legs to toe time of a jazz tune. Lady Ward first essayed the “ camel,” a curious humped saddle to which she clung while it lurched, rolled, and swayed for three minutes. Then she mounted a stationary cycle apd pedalled off miles of energy. Later she trotted, cantered, and galloped on a mechanical horse, rowed a stationary boat, and finally faced a percussion machine whose leather fists pummelled her body. She came out after losing half a pound in weight in half an hour. “ One certainly must suffer to be beautiful,” she states.
