“THE WITNESS OF THE CHURCH”
ro THE EDITOE. Sir, — I have received the copy of the Outlook sent by “ Commonsense Believer,” and must thank him for it. I have read through the verbatim report of Professor Collie’s address, and find interesting confirmation of some of the things I have been saying. Professor Collie admits that there are obvious signs that religious beliefs are losing their hold, and saye that the Church “is living on its inherited spiritual capital.” He also makes a statement, rather remarkable from a clergyman, that “ there is apt to be a faint odour of chloroform about all Christian traditions and institutions.” 1 also find confirmation of another implication ot mine in the statement, “ Christian truth is more or less unintelligible until it conquers the heart.” This is consistent with the Rationalist claim that Christian beliefs are based mainly on emotional experience, and not on intellectual conviction. I also heartily commend the address to your readers. —I am, etc.,
June 11. Unbeliever. [This correspondence is closed. — Ed, O.D.T.]
