■' MRS J. SOUTHEY - w The death occurred last Friday, at her residence in Como street; Maori Hill, of Mrs John Southey, widow of the Rev. John Southey, Home Director for Australia and New Zealand, of the China Inland Mission, and only of the late Mr William Brown, of this city, Mrs, Southey was well known both at Home and abroad for her activities in church affairs. She is survived by her brother; Mr ( R. S. Cree Brown, of Dunedin. 1 The funeral took place at the Northern Cemetery last Saturday. FLYING ACCIDENT NEW ZEALAND OFFICER KILLED. (From Ouk Own Coeeespondsns.) LONDON, May 7. A young New Zealander, Flying Officer Stewart Sinclair Mackay, lost his life In a flying accident on Saturday, May 2. The accident occurred at Ashby de la Launde, Lincolnshire, and the machine in use was an Avro aircraft of No. 2 Flying’Training School, Digby. A corporal named Josiah Swain, the other occupant of the aeroplane, was slightly injured. • I Flying Officer Stewart, who was the son, of Mrs T. W. Le Cocq, of Hackthorne road, Cashmere, Christchurch, , was born at Waipukurau in 1907, and was educated at Ashburton High School, He obtained a short service commission in the Air -Force on August 24, 1928, ( and his rank of pilot officer was cornfirmed on September 17, 1929. He was promoted to the rank of flying officer on February 24, 1930. After leaving the Training School he was posted to No. 35 Bomber Squadron at Bircjiara Newton, King’s Lynn, on August 14, 1929. On April 2? of this year he went to No. 2 Flying, Training -School, Digby, as flying instructor. A brother Flying Officer Ulrich Mackay, 1 is at V present stationed at Hinaidi, Iraq.
