SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS
(From Odr Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, April 11. THE FREEZING INDUSTRY. An exceptionally busy time is being experienced at the South Otago Freezing Works just now, and it is likely that the pressure will last till the end of the month. Space is very difficult to secure in consequence, but the men on the slaughter board are said to be reaching out after new records in order to relieve the congestion. To date the company has put through 139,000 head of sheep and lambs, an increase of 26,000 at the corresponding time last season. FARMERS’ UNION. A meeting of representatives of the various district branches of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Borough Chambers yesterday afternoon for the purpose of electing two representatives to the Provincial Executive of the union. Messrs F. Waite, A. Craig, and John Christie were nominated, and on a ballot the two former were elected. The meeting was not a truly representative one, for the reason that the seven branches included in the ward were not represented by delegates. Mr Neiderer, area officer for the union, was present, and briefly addressed the meeting on union matters. Mr J. Johnston presided. At a meeting of the Gatlins branches held at Owaka, Mr T. Barr was elected as representative for that district on the Provincial Executive. PERSONAL, On the eve of her departure for Dunedin Mrs J. Mitchell was entertained by the members of St. Mark’s (Anglican) Ladies’ Guild, and presented with a box of handkerchiefs. Mrs N. Bell, who made the presentation, praised the capability displayed by Mrs Mitchell while occupying the position of president of the guild.
CLUTHA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. The balance sheet of the Clutha Caledonian Society disclosed a loss of practically £6 on ‘the meeting, the receipts (including those from the dance) amounting to £lls 17s 7d, and the expenditure to £l2l 16s 10d. The president stated that all things considered the result was satisfactory. The society had given over £6 extra in prize money compared with the previous year, but the gate had shown a drop of £9.
