BOWLING

By Jack. FIXTURES Dunedin Centre’s Easter tourney; North Otago Centre’s Easter tourney. INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Congratulations, to. the Taieri Club on winning the interclub championship for the 1930-31 season. The Taieri men are always hard nuts, to crack, and this season has been no exception, for, in addition to winning the interclub they were runners-up for the Adess shield, which goes to the winner of the single-rink championship—the Kaituna Club. : The West Harbour (Bub is also to be congratulated on finishing in the role of runner-up. I do not think it is too much to say that the performance of West Harbour is the outstanding one of the competition. This club puts two sections (six rinks) on the green each Saturday; and it is left with a reserve of only four or five players. Since the interclub competition was instituted 20 years ago it has been won by seven clubs —Caledonian eight' times (including seven years in succession), Dunedin four, Taieri three, Kaituna two, St. Hilda one, Roslyn one, and Mornington one. The final round of the championship was played on Saturday in ideal weather conditions. Taieri had a lead of 12 points over its nearest rival —West Harbour—so that it had to lose both sections and West Harbour win both to make a tie. However, it was not to be. West Harbour did all that was required by. defeating Dunedin in two sections, but Taieri, playing against Caledonian, won one and lost one section, and that settled the championship for the present season. Connor. (West Harbour) defeated Gardiner (Dunedin) by the substantial margin of 26 points to 14., In the. same; section, Neill (Dunedin) defeated Silver. (West Harbour) by 25 to 23, but the latter had the , distinction of scoring the possible—eightr—against the , Dunedin skip. ' . Caledonian won one section against Taieri by 64 points to 60, the deciding factor being Dey’s 27 to Cousins’s 17. The other section was won by Taieri by 68 to 51. Thomson (Taieri) scored 27 to Henaghan’s 15, and this settled Caledonian’s chances. The following table shows the results of Saturday’s interclub matches:—-

The following la a list of the 1 winners of the interclub championship since the inception of the competition in 1911:

EASTER TOURNAMENT X The growing popularity of the Easter tourney is. shown by the entries received by the se«ejtary, (Mr R.: Hanning),.! Fifty six entries have been received for the. Singles against 48 last year, .144 ior the Pair* against-120,‘and 68 for the’Rinks against 54. The tournament will be opened to-day with the Singles, the Rinks being played * to-morrow, and the Pairs on Saturday. The finals will, of course, be decided on Monday. Play will start each day at 8.30 a.m. CENTRAL OTAGO CENTRE The section play for the annual Pairs tournament of the Central Otago Centre was played on the Roxburgh* green on, Saturday, March 21, and on the Clyde and Cromwell greens on Anniversary Day. Cromwell completed its section, but a heavy thunderstorm put the Clyde, greenunder water in. 20 minutes after, two ■rounds had been played. The winners were drawn from the hat, O’Connell and Paulin, of Clyde, being the lucky pair. L. Manuel and A. Henderson won the Roxburgh section, and J. Smith and ,E. Jolly the Cromwell one. - Paulin was again lucky enough to. draw the bye. Jolly playing Henderson, whom he easily accounted for by 20 points to 6. Jolly, however, more than met his match in Paulin, who played a brilliant drawing game, some of his shots being remarkably fine efforts. Jolly was playing one of his best games, but could not hold his opponent. Both leads played well, and O’Connqll’s directions to his skip were of-great value. Smith, on the other hand, harassed his skip with unnecesary instructions, The Clyde pair' led from the second head, having a lead of 14 to 1 at one stage. Jolly lay seven in one head with a bowl to go. when-Paulin drew second shot, and later he trailed the kitty for five, but pushed it through a- little gap to one of the other side. No other chances of a “ pot ” came his way, the Clyde man mixing them and keeping the score down to single points. Paulin ran out a winner by, 19 points. to 12. The Clyde green was again in splendid order. The following are the results of the Pairs competition to date:— 1928 G., Stumbles and C. Smart, 1929 D. Nicol and E. Jolly. 1930 — Dr Brokenshire and J. L. Davidson, 1931 J, O’Connell and R. N, Paulin.
