TROTTING.

By Sentinel. The trotter Tamerlane is not at present in work, and it is possible that no turther effort will be made to race him. The Austra|ian-bred Machine Gun showed some form in the Champion Handicap at Wellington, but he does not appear to be on the improve. Machine Uun as a fine stayer and races best on a nghbhanded track. t • ■ who is by Logan. Pointer from Irish Beauty, showed a good deal of speed in his race at'Wellington last week and may make a useful sprinter. He is trained by S. A. Edwards, who is gradually getting a useful team together, H. Frost is. working a couple of two-year-olds at New Brighton. A colt, by Rey de Oro from Doraldina, the dam of Daphne de Oro, has not done much work. He is built on much stouter lines than his sister, and so far he has not been asked to go fast. An Author Dillon youngster, in the same stable, is from the Calm mare. Miss Dorothy, and is much more forward.' When the three-year-old David M‘El- - made bis first appearance, in the Novice Handicap, at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, last month, he looked far from ready, but he paced a capital race for his initial effort and finished second to Logaleen. He was made favourite for the Sharpe Handicap at the meeting held last Saturday, but was never prominent at any stage of the race. David M’Elwyn is a very quality-looking three-year-old, and with some more racing experience he seems destined to win races. The pacer Donard met with a mishap a little time ago, and has had to be thrown out of training. He took .fright on the road and fell, injuring one of his legs. This is very unfortunate for D. M. Robertson, who was just getting the big pacer to race well. As a three-year-old Donard looked like developing into a high-grade • pacer, but later he became very bad at the barrier and was not raced for a'" long time. The New Brighton trainer spent a lot of time with the pacer and gradually improved him, so that when he was raced at the West Coast meetings at Christmas and New Year time he started off well in his races. Having got him to begin well, Robertson was working at Donard to. improve his speed, and he was doing particularly well in training just prior to the mishap. At the Auckland meeting to-day. Lindbergh is likely to be showing the shortest price in the Otahuhu Handicap, and C. S. Donald’s pacer will need only to travel smoothly to be a place getter. Free Advice and Jewel Pointer will also carry heavy support. Glenrossie is one of the most consistent pacera in commission, and he looks nicely placed in the Moss Davis Handicap today. The public will probably make him favourite over Baron Bingen and Nella Dillon. Horses likely to be fancied in the balance of events at the Auckland meeting today are:—Caballero and Arapai, in the Trial Handicap; Grand Canyon and Bingen Crest, in the Waiheke Handicap; Gold Treasure and Benefice, in the Papakura Handicap; Kolmar and Surprise Journey, in the February Handicap; Kewpie’s Guy and Some Dillon, in the Mount Albert Handicap; and Author Franz and Mignonne in the Railway Handicap.
