RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES

(Special to Dailt Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 20. The conditions were very pleasant for training operations at Riccarton this morning. . The outside of the course proper and No. 6 grass track were open, in addition to the plough, but the proceedings did not arouse much interest. A few horses were galloped, but most of the work was of the useful order. Lady Para sprinted three furlongs on the plough in 36 2-ssec, and the two-year-old Cape Gold executed a similar task. Juniper strode over six furlongs on the No, 6 track in Imin 18sec, going at an even pace all the way.

Knocklong and Huntly occupied 51 3-ssec for half a mile on the plough. Dodge and Azalea went round to the three furlong post at an easy pace, and then sprinted home, but they were not doing their best. Fair Weather and Hot Tea ran five furlongs on the course proper in Imin 3 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec. They finished together, but Fair Weather was going comfortably at the end. Jaloux and Pride got to the end of six furlongs on the plough in Imin 16 2-ssec. Jaloux was half a length in front and going easily at the winning post, his effort being very attractive. Boundary Hit sprinted three furlongs up the back on No. 6 track in 36 2-ssec, and did it comfortably. Owlsflight and Sailor’s Love did three furlongs up the hack on the plough in 37 l-ssec —a useful effort. « Raineses covered seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 31 4-ssec. He was going very well at the finish. Last March registered 48 3-ssec for half a mile on the course. He finished up his task very strongly. Don Jose did two circuits on the plough, brushing home the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. While Pixie Gold concluded one round with three furlongs in 38sec, Battle Queen ran half a mile on the plough in 51sec, finishing well. True Shaft and Knockany were together throughout three furlongs up the back of the course in 37 2-ssec. Black Duke, with Assemble as a mate for the last six furlongs, covered a mile on the plough in Imin 44sec. They finished on terms, and it was a useful effort.

Taku Tama and Coomassie, two overnight arrivals from the West Coast, did steady work on the plough, where a large number of other horses did easy tasks. The two-year-old Maritime, who was lame after galloping on Thursday, will not be a starter at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting to-morrow. Spear Lad, a member of the team that G. Jones has brought to Riecarton, has the reputation of being a good galloper. He has not done well on the trip, however, having- gone off his feed, and this will prejudice his prospects. ... Consequent on the death of their owner, Mr J. S. Barrett, Tautbow and Mistress Quickly have been scratched for their engagements at Riecarton. The \ iscount, formerly owned by the late Mr Barrett, was acquired on leace recently by his trainer, T. H. Gillett, whose colours he will carry in the Trial Plate.
