LAWRENCE NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LAWRENCE, February 9. A meeting of the Lawrence branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the Council Chambers on Satur- / day night, February 7. After the usual routine business of the meeting had been disposed of, the best methods of assisting the sufferers from the Hawke’s Bay earthquake catastrophe were discussed and it was decided to circularise all the farmers in the Tuapeka district soliciting donations in money or stock. It was decided to organise a fat stock drive, as owing to tha economic conditions it was felt that some farmers would be able to give stock in lieu of money. The Railways Department is to be approached for free railage, and the stock will be sent to Burnside and sold. The money realised will be sent forward to the National Relief Fund for distribution. The meeting also decided to ask the Post and Telegraph Department to reduce the annual charges for telephones to farmers by 50 per cent, during the present financial depression. HOUSE DESTROYED. A house occupied by Mr J. Girvan in Eden street was totally destroyed by fire at 12.80 a.m. on Saturday. The fire was first noticed by a neighbour when it had a good hold. The occupants of the house had a narrow escape and had practically no time to save anything. The fire brigade could do nothing, as when it arrived the dwelling was completely gutted. The furniture and effects were insured in the Sun Office. The dwelling belonged to Mr A, J. Dolamore, of Gore, and was insured in the Standard Office for £l5O.
