A GIRL SHOT.

SERIOUSLY INJURED. HER ASSAILANT ARRESTED. (Per United Press Association.) TE AWAMUTU, January 24. Frank Kerr, a carpenter, was arrested this morning on a charge of the at->-tempted murder of Gertruae West. The couple are believed to have been engaged, but recently became estranged. Kerr is said to have borrowed a shotgun and gone to the girl’s home. Little is known of what transpired between them. The girl is believed to be seriously iierr was seen, intoxicated, walking towards the girl’s residence at about 10 o’clock this morning. He had borrowed a shotgun, and when a few chains from the house, while walking on the footpath, was seen to load the pjun. Entering the front gate, he went up to the girl, who was in the garden. They talked for a minute or 1 two, and then the girl called her father. When the latter came out of the house Kerr raised the gun and shot the girl before her-father could reach her. Constable Rimme’r, on arrival, found Kerr kneeling over the girl. . The girl, with very serious abdominal injuries, was removed to Waikato Hospital. She retained consciousness, but ( hag said nothing about her assailant. It appears that she had broken ber engagement a few days ago. . . • . Kerr is 39 years old and the girl is about 19. ‘
