EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was concluded yesterday iporning. The chairman (Mr J. Wallace) presided. RESIGNATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. The following resignations were accepted : —Hugh Marshall, headmaster, Lawrence D.H,; Winifred J. Hay, sole teacher, Akatore; Betty Whitcombe, sole teacher, Arthurton; Phyllis Jamie, sole teacher, Kyeburn Diggings; Robert W. Connor, sole teacher, Makarora; Annie E. Stuck, sole teacher, Tapui; Elizabeth S. D. Whyte, assistant, Bannockburn; Alan G. Fleming, fifth assistant, Caversham,; Francis H. Shepherd, fifth assistant, High Street; Eileen M. Walden, assistant, North-East Valley; Jean N. Hendry, assistant, Otanomomo; Douglas Simpson, fifth assistant, St. Clair; Millicent B. Potts, subs assistant, Roxburgh; Edward R. Pcttitt, second assistant, Lawrence. The following appointments were made: —Douglas Simpson, headmaster, Allanton; John I. Miller, headmaster, Ravensbourue; Frederick W. Chapman, sole teacher, Kia Ora; Elizabeth S. D. Whyte, sole teacher, Pukerangi; Margery Kingston, sole teacher, West Taieri; Avis Gosden, ninth assistant, Kaikorai; Millicent B. Potts, assistant, Raufurly; Laura M. Morrissey, assistant, Waitahuna; Ethel Jones, fourteenth assistant, Caversham; Jean N. Hendry, eleventh assistant, Normal; Muriel M. Graham, domestic science instructress. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £24,104 14s 7d were passed for payment. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. The Miller’s Plat. Committee’s application for a subsidy for concrete work round the school was referred to the architect. The architect reported that to fit op the shelter shed at Oturehua for use as a temporary classroom would cost about £4O. This included lining and a stove, but in spite of this the conditions would not be, good in winter. —The chairman said that there was some likelihood of an increase in the attendance in the near future, but there bad been difficulty in keeping up an average attendance of 36 out of 41, and to ask for a new room was to ask for the impossible.—lt was decided to make use of the shelter shed. It was decided to carry out repairs at the residence at Tahakopa at a cost of £65ATTENDANCE FIGURES. The secretary reported that the attendance returns for the third term ended December 31 last showed that at the end of the term there had been 249 schools in operation in the district. The chairman said that he was pleased to sec that the attendance was being kept up. An average of nearly 93 per cent, was a rattling good attendance. Mr D. T. Fleming: I think Otago's attendance is the best in New Zealand, The chairman: It has been for many years. . •
