The railway deviation Works at Crichton Hill, which have been in progress for several months, are now approaching completion. Altogether there are about 130 men employed oh the Works at present. Work will be stopped this Week for the Christmas holidays on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will, however. be no break for the Hew Year holidays, and it is anticipated that by working continuously at New Year time the first train will be enabled to pass over the deviated line on Sunday night, January 4—the “ midnight limited ” from Invercargill. Unemployment relief. The Milton Borough Council has received advice from the Unemployment Board that the first allocation under the board’s No. 2 scheme, subsidy oa wages for work provided by private employers, for the Milton district is £3O, which amount must not be exceeded without further approval from the hoard.
