There v.as a fair attendance of members of the branch, the president (Mr J. A. Johnston) in the chair. Mr Malcolm, who was the principal speaker, stated that he had given considerable study to this question of unemployment in relation to •ulture and he thought that if the Unemployment Board went about it in the nght way not only would agriculture be assisted and production, which was all important, increased, but thousands of unemployed workers would be usefully employed at a fair rate of pay. five years. He suggested a system of small - contracts between farmer and labourer, with the Government assisting by subsidising the price agreed upon for the contract. The contracts would be based on the current rate’ ruling in the district for such work. The Unemployment Board would engage the workers and pay them what it liked, but the farmer would have five years in which to pay back the contract money and the cost of the material, which the board Would supply.—Mr John Christie offered several objections to the scheme.—Mr Malcolm, .while not disputing the truth of fome of Mr Christie’s statements, said that ms (Mr Malcolm’s) scheme offered immediate relief for unemployed men.
