SEA SERPENT STORY.
CHASING A MONSTER. Holiday-makers at Herne Bay, England, have had a big thrill—they thought they saw a sea serpent, and some chased it in speed boats. Whether actually it was a school of porpoises or a giant conger eel is a matter for conjecture. The excited cries of a number of people on the cliffs at Beltinge first drew attention to the “ sea serpent,” which was churning the water into foam at a point about a mile and a-half beyond Herne Bay pier. Speed boats, travelling at 40 miles an hour, put out in pursuit, while motor boats joined in the chase, which lasted' half ail hour. The strange monster, which was said to be about 20ft in length, succeeded in evading capture, however, none of its pursuers being able to approach within a quarter of a mile. It travelled with an undulating motion, and was said to have a smooth skin, dark ou top, and yellow below. Bathers left the water in a panic, and hundreds of holiday-makers lined the sea front to watch the pursuit.
