(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, December 20. THE WOOL MARKET. The result of the Dunedin wool sale was eagerly discussed by farmers who were in Balclutha yesterday, and the general expression was one of gladnesse at the improved tone of the market. An agent well versed in these matters who was present at she sale stated to the representative of the Daily Times that it was not so much the prices realised that gave cause for hope, but the fact of the buyers’ eagerness to get the wool. TRADE DEPRESSION. Messrs P. M'Skimming and Son’s Benbar Pottery works will be closed _ down from Christmas until March 1' owing to the present trade conditions. The same firm’s Wingatui Brick Works will also bo closed for a similar period. Over 40 men at Benhar will be rendered idle. PERSONAL. Thirty-two applications were received by the Clutha County Council for the position of assistant clerk, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr N. Watt, and at yesterday T s meeting these were narrowed down to two, who will be asked for a personal interview by a sub-commit-tee, which will have power to make an appointment. Mr Thomas Wilson, second assistant at the Balclutha School, was the recipient of a pair of brass book-ends from the staff and a well-bound volume from the pupils of his class on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mies M'Diarmid and Mr W. F. Reid, junior teachers, who are leaving after completing a year at the school, each received presentations of volumes. Mr W. O’Connor, headmaster, made the presentations.
