(From Our Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, September, 29. There was a spell of warm weather' early in the week, but Saturday and Sunday brought a return to wintry conditions, Squalls were sweeping the hills all ■ day on Sunday. These conditions are very unfavourable for lambing, whilst pastures ■arc also very backward. RAILWAY RIFLE CLUB. , The Railway Rifle Club has held two. further competitions. The first was for- a trophy presented by the club, and left the aggregates as follows: —D. Knowles 158, A. Berryman 157, W. Campbell 156, L. Paterson 156, R. Bramley 158, J. Boyes 156, F. Middleton 155, A. Hughes 155 (including the possible off the rifle for the second time this season), E. M'Lachlan 154, V. Sanders 154, J. Dennison 154, W.’ Veint 153, E. Lynch 153, J. Webb 150. Railway 467 defeated Cromwell 460. In the weekly shoot on Thursday the scores were: —D. Knowles, 75 (5), 80; L. Paterson, 70 (scr), 70; J. O’Neill, 78 (scr), 78; W. Veint, 78 (scr), 78; G. M’Lachlan, 78 (scr), 78; A. Hughes, 78 (scr), 78; E. Lynch, 76 (scr), 76; v. Sanders,'7s (1), 76; F. Middleton, 75 (scr), 75; J. Dennison, 71 (4), 75; G. Chalmers, 70 (4). 74; R. Hughes, 71 (3), 74; J. Boyes, 72 ,(scr). 72; J. Webb, 72 (scr), 72; W. Campbell, 71 (scr), 71; A. Berryman, 62 (0), 68; A. Hyndman, 42 (8), 50. D. Knowles won the handicap button and L. Paterson the rifle button. In the teams shoot the scores were:—Cromwell 457, Railway 445. GIRL GUIDES. . The first annual meeting of the Cromwell Girl Guides disclosed a most satisfactory state of affairs for the first year. Under Captain Faithful, and with an enthusiastic committee, excellent progress has been made. The balance sheet showed a credit balance'of £l6 4s 2d. The following officers were elected' for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Harrison; vice-president, Mrs Cowey; secretary and treasurer, Mrs R. Smart; committee—the ofheers and Mesdames Jelley, Lord, Hansen, _C. Smart, Mitchell, A. R. Chisholm, Wtshart, Matron Wilson, and the Mayor (Sir Roberts). ■ The first birthday party was held on Thursday evening, and a most happy time was’spent. , After an interesting programme by the Guides complimentary speeches were made by numerous officials from other centres And by the Mayor. All expressed satisfaction at the excellent result of the first veal ’s work. FOOTBALL. * The Vincent Rugby Football Sub -unions tournament wm , field at Cromwell on Saturday. With the exception of a shower early in the day, the weather was fine, and the grounds were in good order. There was a very large attendance from all parts oi Central Otago. Play was continuous from 10 a.m. until 5.30 p.m., the tournament being well controlled. The large crowd witnessed some good football, on the part of the schoolboys and juniors particularly. Results:— Bantams, —-Five teams competed, and the final was won by Miller’s' Flat, who defeated Alexandra by 3 points to nil. The members of the winning team were: S. Hawes H. Peek, D. Brown, W. Campbell, C. Campbell, A. Morrissey, H. ■ Arnott. Schoolboys.—Sis teams took part, and ai , a was between Roxburgh and Alexandra, the former winning -“by 5 E: to nil. The winning, team was as s:—G. Waigtb, T. Henderson, L. George, K. Muir, A. MTherson, P. Dunlay,- R. Turnbull. Juniors.—Four teams entered. In the final Roxburgh defeated Miller’s Flat by 3 points to nil. The'' winning team was as follows:—J. Waigtl}, J. Campbell, S. Mosley, D. Broad, L. Shand, J. Dunlav. E. Moore. . B Grade.—Of an entry of 10 teams eight competed, and the preliminaries left the issue between Lowburn A and Alexandra. After 28 minutes’ play, Alexandra won by 3 points to nit.' , The winners were:—D. L. Cooney, A. Ashworth, S. J, lierce, S. W. Jackson, A. R. Thomson, J. A. Avnott, B. Carline. Seniors.—Twelve teams competed, and Matakanui and Coal Creek were in the nniil. Earlier in the day Coal Creek had had a very strenuous game against Heriot, 0 ,,e of the longest games of the day. Matakanui,-who played good football, always held Coal Creek, and won by 6 points to nil. The winning team was as follows:—T. Clouston, P. Moran, J. Donnelly, I. Donnelly, A. Alexander, J. Kilgour, J. Moran. MINING. A number of miners seized a favourable opportunity early last week to go . over to the Nevis field, where work i should soon be in full swing on the I hydraulic claims and the Upper Nevis dredge.
