THOUSAND PEOPLE HOAXED
, PRACTICAL JOKER AT WORK. People in the mining village of Lower Gprnal, live miles from Wolverhampton, were lately the victims of a film hoax. It was known there was the likehood of a film being made in the neighbourhood, and excitement ran high when the residents received a letter "from Elstree informing them that 100 extras were required for the film and that a selection would be made of suitable candidates on an open space at Gornal. About 100 people gathered on the open space, only to be disappointed when a stranger left a letter addressed to the landlord of the Bed Lion Inn, which read: “This letter will inform you that the residents of Gornal are the victim" of a practical joke. Laugh and the world laughs with you is an old adage, but it is nevertheless true. When I learned that a talking picture was to be produced in Gornal I could not allow myself to let the opportunity pass for hoaxing the village.”
