OTAGO RUGBY UNION.

The weekly meeting of the committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr H. Harris) occupied the chair. Messrs Twcedie and Lynch, the managers of the Hawkers Bay team, were welcomed to the meeting. It was decided to send the Dunedin Fourth Grade team to Balclutha on Saturday week to play a South Otago junior team. The South Otago team is to be composed of players under 19 years of age. Mr A. Haynes was appointed manager of the Dunedin team. It was also decided, in reply to a request from the South Otago Subunion, to endeavour to send a Dunedin team to Balclutha on September 20 to play a South Otago representative team. x Thc Eastern Districts Sub-union wrote suggesting an earlier date than September 13 tor the match at Palmerston between the Otago junior representatives and, the Eastern Districts team.—lt was decided to reply that it was impossible to play the game at an earlier date. The High School Club wrote stating that its matches—senior and junior—with the Gore High School teams would take place on Saturday at Dunedin, It was decided to award the match between the Port Chalmers Fourth Grade team and Zingari-Richmond to the latter club, the Port Club having played a youth over age. A letter was received from Mr J. 0. M'Gillivray. secretary of the Canterbury Union, asking the committee to reconsider its decision not to accept the offer by Mr Payne of medals to the players of the winning team in the Payne Trophy match. The writer stated that Mr Payne’s intention was to commemorate the visit of the British team. In view of this, and also in view of the fact that Mr Payne had already had the medals struck, the Canterbury Union would appreciate reconsideration of the offer made to the Otago Union, —The chairman said if there was no objection they could consider that night the question of rescinding the resolution on the books of the union and decide whether they wuld accept the offer.— Mr D. M. Stuart said he was opposed to accepting the offer. He did not think it was a good principle,—Mr J. Mitchell then gave notice to move at the next meeting or the committee that the resolution be rescinded, FLAG COMPETITIONS.

Mr Holden, chairman of the Flag Committee, paid his committee recommended that the First Grade competition he declared closed,-and that the two leading teams —Alhambra and Kaikorai—play off the final next Saturday.—Approved. ' That the Third Grade competition be closed, and,that Pirates A be declared winners. Pirates had 24 points, Alhambra B, 23 points, and Otago High School 22 points. The teams had pjayel a full round,—Approved. That the Fourth Grade Competition be closed, and that Dunedin be. declared the winners. The Dunedin Club had 21 points, and it had a lead of six points over the next team.—Approved. That tbe Sixth Grade competition be closed, and Southern (22 points) be declared winners.—Approved. All tbe Second Grade teams, said Mr Holden, would ploy next Saturday. Mr Holden said that it won hoped to reach some finality in the Fifth Grado competition next Saturday, when the five top teams and another team would play. GATE RECEIPTS. The secretary reported that the gate receipts from the,matches between the country teams at Tahuna Park last Tuesday had amounted to £3 8» 6d; from the Combined County team and the Metropolitan Team to £l9 10s 6d; and from the match at Carisbrook on Saturday to £6l 2 a 6d. Fletcher and W. Flawn. OTAGO v. HAWKE’S BAY The representative match between Otago and Hawke’s Bdy will be played at 3,15 p.m. on Wednesday. It wil) depend on the weather whether the match will he played at Tahupa Park or Carisbrook. The Hawke’s Bay team have a very fine set of forwards, who average 14.6. among them being Cyril Brownlie, of All Black fame. The team js considered a good one, both back and forward, and should prove a tough proposition, Otago will have a stronger side than those that represented the province in the previous representative games, and should put up a good showing against their opponents. The Hawke’s Bay team arrived yesterday morning, and were met by officials from the union and conveyed to the Provincial Hotel, where they are staying. HAWKE’S BAY TEAM. PORTER'S RETIREMENT AT END OP SEASON. (Peb United Pbebs Association.) WELLINGTON, August 11. Before ho retires from active Rugby football C. G. Porter, captain of the New Zealand and Wellington teams, will see the present season opt. He said tins today in answer to an inquiry covering his plans. Some Wellington supporters, when Porter announced at the dinner to the British team on Saturday that he, was giving the game up, thought that the AH Black captain intended to shed his jersey immediately, and would not take part in any more matches. Porter.says that be was only referring to international games when he said, “This is my last game for New Zealand.” He told a reporter to-day that he would continue to play for his club and province until the end of the season, and would then make room for younger players
