PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last night in the Municipal Chambers. There were present Mr W. Love (Mayor), Crs L. Smith, A. Bell, T. Mathewson, R. Willmott, T. Scollay, N, H. Campbell, J. Craigic, A. Love, F. Smith, and W. Lunn. The Mayor referred to the recent deaths of Miss Duncan, Mrs M'Callutn, Mrs Gardner, and Miss Monson, and reso-\ lotions of sympathy with the relatives were carried. PORT CHALMERS BAND. Mr' R. Willmott, secretary of the local band, wrote asking the council to receive a deputation in .respect to forming a municipal band, and granting financial assistance.—Messrs A. Peters, J. Olson, and G. M'Dowell waited on the council, and put the cape for the band. The band’s liabilities at present amounted to £74, and would soon be increased to £l2O. There was a sum of about £ls in cash on hand. The band would be playing publicly in about six months. A substantial subsidy, also a room and lighting, was asked for from the council.—After the deputation withdrew the council decided to ask a sub-committee front the band to meet the Finance Committee and discuss the proposals. CORRESPONDENCE. Messrs J. H, Crawford and P. Hunter wrote directing attention to a slip on section 132, evidently caused by surface water or seepage from Aurora terrace.— Resolved that the Works Committee visit the place before any action was taken. A printed copy of the proceedings at a recent conference in Invercargill was received from the Municipal AssociationReceived. • REPORTS. The Works Committee reported:—Your commjtttee begs to report that during the month ended July 31 the following work had been carried out by the outside staff. —General maintenance: Water tables have been cleaned in Harrington street, Bernicia street, Bellevue place, Magnetic street, Meridian street. Fox street, Laing street and Burns. street. A new mudtank and 16 feet of storm-water drain were put in and connected to the sewer in WickJiffe terrace, A stone wall was erected and the .pathway graded where the bank slipped away at Mussel Bay, Toppings and metal chips were spread on Harbour terrace footpath, and also on the highway, Eight yards of ashes were spread in the gasworks right-of-way. The tractor has had a thorough overhaul and is in good working order. Lower Harbour road: Details, having, been supplied in connection with improving the Lower Harbour road, Carey’s Bay, formal application has been made in respect to subsidy and the carrying out of the work by day labour. Borough Highway: The concrete kerb and channel has been started on the highway, and up to the present time two and a-half chains have been completed. This work ,is still proceeding. Pence: The fence on the highway is to be commenced immediately, apd the work will be. carried out concurrently with the channelling on the same sector. The fence will be of jarrab with two 4x2 rails, Water Department: During the month four water services were repaired and one new service laid. The reservoir now being- full, advantage is to be taken to scour the water mains in the borough immediately.— I Tlie report was adopted on the motion of Cr F.. Smith., The General Committee reported: Your committee begs to report having examined accounts as presented and recommends same for payment. Gas Department; The gas engineer in his report for the month of July states, inter alia, that a total of 34 tons of coal was carbonised, gas made being 48fi,300 c,f„ an average of 14,300 c.f, to the ton. During the past two months . the plant has beep called upon many times to run 40 hours without' astop, necessitating night shift work, During the month one new service was laid and four services attended to. Sales pf residuals* continue good and the department at the present time -is able to dispose of all coke and tar stocks without difficulty, The new retort setting is to be commenced early' in September, This work is somewhat overdue, but from word received it is found that the delay is in no way . tha fault of the. retort setter. The old retorts have been patched and are still giving service, Dogs: The committee has directed that the dog-tkx collector be instructed to round up all dogs and dqgs without proper collars with a yiew to destroying them failing registration being effected forthwith. Several complaints have been received of the number of dogs running about the main streets and it is intended to take some action in' the matter. Chit-, drens playgrounds; The matter of equipping the children’s playing area is well in hand and the equipment will be ordered at an early date for the playing areas at Mussel Bay and Carey’s Bay,—The chairman answered several questions in regard to tar prepared at the gas works for .road surfacing.—A discussion ensued, during which it was stated that the setting of the new retorts would be commenced next month,—The Mayor explained that night duty had been necessary at the gas works to meet the increased demand for gas.—The report was adopted.
