ST. KILDA BOROUGH.

FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the St. Hilda Borough Council was held last night in the Council Chambers,.the Mayor (Mr J. Beattie) presiding. . There were also present Crs C- Conn, J. Fleming, T. D. B. Roy, F. O, Gillam, G. Glue, W. G. Baird, E. Longworth. A. Smiley, H. H. Leary, and R. Telfer.'

A letter .was received from the Otago and Southland General Labourers’ Union referring to what was considered by the union.to be an anomaly in regard to men who were given .employment at 13s 4d per day by the Charitable Aid Board on Behalf of the council. This rate was thought to Be -insufficient to meet the responsibilities of life, and the hope Vas axpressed that the men would be paid at -least. 14s per day.—The letter was received.

The Tainui, Progress League wrote regarding the numbering of the houses,in Bowen and Gilfillan streets. As confusion had arisen frpm this source, it -was asked that ■ the houses .should be re-numbered. This had previously been pointed out to the council, and the league now. wished to bring the matter up again.—Cr Longworth said The position was a peculiar one, hut. the council could not avoid the circumstances. He explained the manner in which the numbers coincided. He did not think the matter was a serious one.— After some little discussion, it was decided to go into the matter with the City Council. Advice was received from the secretary of the Otago Hospital Board that, the levy on the council for the year April 1, 1930, to March 31, 1931, would be £3,171 7s 4d. This would'be payable in foftr equal instalments on or before June 30, August 30, November 20, and Pebruaiy 28, 1931.—The letter was received. The engineer ’(Mr J. Glynn) reported as follows on the work done during , the past fortnight:— The-work of patching streets and footpaths, grassing, channels, cutting channel in Royal crescent, making concrete blocks, mixing asphalt, and placing crossings has been carried out. 1 would suggest for the ensuing fortnight, regarding the chanpel in Victoria road, re-forining the streets in Park Ward, and-patching streets, footpaths; etc.
