A FORTUNATE ESCAPE. BUS COLLIDES WITH-TRAIN. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, June 16. A narrow escape was experienced by the occupants of a bus travelling between Hamilton and Te Aroha on Saturday night when, about 7 o’clock, the bus crashed into the train from Cambridge at Newstead. The driver applied his brakes instantly, with the result that the bus was slewed round into a ditch without capsizing. D. Wright (Hamilton), a passenger, was slightly injured in the shoulder, and one woman suffered from shock. The damage lias confined to a wrecked radiator and smashed windscreen. KILLED IN CAR COLLISION, (Per United Press Association.) . HAMILTON, June 16. An inquest on Thomas Barton Shaw, a B. farmer, of Tauwhare, who was in a collision between two care at INewstead on May 8, one of which was driven by his cousin (Hector John Shaw), was held to-day. The coroner found that the deceased met his death through head injuries as the result of a collision* furtiier, that Hector Shaw. drove the car in a manner dangerous to the public. Cornelius Liddy, aged 27, a single man, whose mother lives at Rakaia, met with a fatal bushfelling accident at Anatimo, in the Takaka district. The deceased was pinned on a stump byfallen tree, and it was impossible to release him till the tree was cut through. ■

FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENTADJOURNED INQUEST CONTINUED. T T £ e ourned inquest on the body of Lieslie Thomas Hunt, who was injured in a motor accident near Dunhack on June 7, and died in the Dunedin Hospital on the morning of June 9, was continued at the courthouse yesterday, Mr H. W. Bundle, SM., sitting as coroner. ‘ Dr Renfrew White stated that he operated on the deceased at 8.30 a.m. on June 8. and saw him again at 7,p.m. the same evening, when his condition was very fair. He next saw him at 9 a.m. on June 9. He was then in a dying state. An acute infection of the right knee due to gag gangrene had developed and had spread to the right thigh and upwards, so that his condition was hopeless. When witness, operated, there were no special conditions apparent to suggest the necessity for any immediate operation. When the deceased was admitted he was bo shocked that any operation was out,of the question. 'From the condition of the fractured left thigh it might have been advisable to nave sent him on to Dunedin. Hosmtar by ambulance rather than by car, but his condition rendered it imperative that he should be treated as soon, as possible. _ On his admission to 'Hospital be was given anthtetanic and anti-gangrene serum. His injuries were consistent with the heavy wheel of a motor lorry having passed over him. Drß. L. Wilson, who examined the deceased on admission .to hospital, stated that he found him to be suffering, from a fractured, left thigh, a lacerated .wound on the right knee joint, minor scalp wounds, and abrasions on the left side of th-j body. He was-suffering from severe sh<»:, and restorative treatment was applied. Dr White saw him later in the evening and .gave him anti-tetanic and anti-gangrene injections; but decided that he was .too shocked- to operate on* At 8.30 a.m; on June 8, Dr White operated and witness assisted. The right knee joint Was attended to and at. the same time the fracture of the left thigh. His. condition was satisfactory until about 4 pun., when he suddenly collapsed. A blood ’transfusion was given t 1 and his condition improved, and remained, so during the evening. Witness saw. him at 3.30 a.m. on June 9 and again at 5.30 p.m., when gadgangrene spreading upwards from the right thigh was.obvious. Witness gave him injections, but from the time the gangrene supervened his condition was practically hppeles§ and he died at” 11.15 p.m. - The inquest; was then adjourned until 10 a.m on Thursday at Palmerston. OLD AGE PENSIONER’S DEATH. _A n ° ld a K c pensioner named Samuel Hill, 76 years of age, who resided with his daughter at 209 Cargill road, South Dunediri, died sud4enly at 8 a.m. yesterday..
