DUNEDIN CENTRE. j ■ ■ ANNUAL REPORT/ The annual report of the Dunedin Bowling Centre states, inter alia:— Seven clubs in the centre return an increase in membership, whilst eight show a decrease.. The membership of seven clubs remain the same as the previous year. It is noticeable that the decreases • refer mostly to the smaller clubs, and this is to be regretted, v and it is hoped that these clubs will receive accessions to their membership next year. FINANCE. After meeting all liabilities there is a credit balance of £l2O 3s 7d, included in which is the unexpected balance of £3O 18s 3d in the entertainment account. The balance at the end of last year was £B6 17s 6d. CANADIAN BOWLERS. We were delighted to welcome the Canadian, bowling party, captained by Dr Krupp. They all proved to be splendid sports, and made many friends hi Dunedin. It was a great pleasure to meet the members of the Canadian party on and off the green, and before leaving, they assured us that they greatly enjoyed their visit to Dunedin. DOMINION TOURNAMENT. This was held in Dunedin in January, under tl\e control of the Dominion Bowling Council, . but the executive were pleased to assist in the arrangements. All the visitors and local players thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. The principal events resulted as follows: —Championship Singles, Mr F. Lambeth (Balmaeewen); Championship Piirs, Messrs G. Gladding and S. Jenkin (Carlton]; Championship Rinks—Messrs E, S. Wilson, L. C. Buiat, J. Dowland, D. M. Stuart (St. Kilda). INTERCLUB MATCHES. During the season we were favoured with good weather over the latter portion, but three games, which should have been played before Christmas, had to be postponed on account of wet weather. These were played at the end of the season, so that our full programme of 12 matches was got through. The Mornington Club won the shieldfwith a score of, 104 points, the other clubs being placed as follows: Caledonian. West Harbour, and Dunedin, equal, with 06 points each; Taieri, 90; Caversham, 84; Green Island, 84; Otago, 80; North-East Valley, 76; Baltnacewen, 72; Kaituna, 68; St. Kilda, 62 2-sth; Anderson’s Bay, 58; Kaikorai, 62; Fairfield, 48; Leith. 44; St. Clair. 42; Roslyn, 20; Outram, 12; Port Chalmers. 6. EASTER TOURNAMENT. This year we were favoured with glorious weather, and all who participated in the tournament enjoyed it thoroughly, and were pleasefl with the arrangements made. For the past three years the entries have been as follows:—l92B—Singles 48, rinks 42, pairs 104; 1929—singles 64, rinks 54, pairs 108; 1930 —singles 48, rinks 54, pairs 120. The prize winners were as follows: —Singles, J. Higginson (Dunedin) 1, C. Tyrrell (Roslyn) 2; pairs. J. Scott and A. Steel (Dunedin) 1, T, Hickey and D, Papps (Edendale) 2; rinks—J. Kay, J. L. Page, A. French. W. Connor (West Harbour) 1, \V. Thompson, W. Elliott, H. Dodd, G. Hely (North-East Valley) 2; J. M’Pherson, C. French,- A. Portman. J. Veitch (West Harbour) 3; J. Scott, J. S. Nicolson. A. Steel, G. Deare (Dunedin) 4. Consolation rinks— J. Carman, J. M'Curdy, J), Dowland, P. H. Edwards (St. Kilda) 1, A. G, Rigby, J. M‘Arthur, D. Bennie, J. Nesbit (Balmacewen) 2, Mr J. Higginson (Dunedin) is to be congratulated on winning the singles for two'years in succession. CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. A special interest was attached to this competition this year, as Mr Wyrley Birch, on behalf of the comedy company which was on the S.S. Manuka, wrecked at Long Point, very kindly and generously

presented a beautiful trophy in appreciation of the kindness received from the Dunedin public since the Manuka wreck. The Manuka Trophy is to be held each year by the winner of the champion of champions’ competition. Mr George Durin, of the North-East Valley Club, has since made a handsome glass case to hold the trophy, and your executive are much indebted to /Ms Dunn for his service. All bowlers greatly appreciate Mr Wyrley Birch's generous action in presenting the trophy, and Mr J,* Tonkin, being the champion for 1930, has the honour of having, his name inscribed as th& first winner of the Manuka Trophy. The run»«r-up was Mr W. Foster (Caversham). The competition was played on the Dunedin green on March 1,3, and ,4. Mr Tonkin won this event also in 1920 and 1926. INTERCENTRE MATCHES. Eight rinks from North Otago, visited Dunedin, and a game was played "on the Kaikorai, green otf March 22, the scores being: Dunedin, 222; North Otago, 119. The match with South Otago was played on the Otago green on March 2, and resulted in a win for Dunedin 165, South Otago 137. Six rinks from Dunedin Centre visited Seacliff on March 24. when Dunedin won by 149 to 88. The trip to Central Otago was very enjoyable, three rinks going via Lawrence, and three via Palmerston, playing games on the way up, and also a combined match at Clyde. Our players were heartily received and. entertained in the Central, and appreciate the welcome extended to them. DOMINION BOWLING COUNCIL. The Dunedin Centre has been ablv represented for many years by Mr J. J. Marlow and Mr D. M. Fastier, and all Dunedin bowlers greatly regret Mr Fastier’e decision not to seek re-election to the council this year. Mr Fastier has rendered valuable service as a member of the council, and his absence from-future council meetings will be sincerely regretted by all members of the council. A resolution expressing appreciation of Mr Fastier's services was passed at the meeting of delegates of the centre held on May 3. Five nominations have been received for election as members of the council, viz,, Messrs D. C. Cameron, jun., W. Connor, J. J. Marlow H. Rowley, and A. J. Sullivan. Mr C. J. Payne (president of the Dominion Council), A. J. Sullivan (treasurer), and Mr R. Hanning (secretary), also deserve the thanks of all bowlers for the arduous work done very efficiently during the recent Dominion tournament. THANKS. The executive desire to place on record their thanks to the various clubs which kindly granted the use of their greens for competitions and tournaments, and to acknowledge gratefully the services of those bowlers who. so kindly gave their assistance at all times, and especially to those who placed motor cars at the disposal of the centre for the entertainment of our visitors. Thanks are also due to the umpires and markers. The ladies deserve our best thanks for assistance given at all games in attending to the afternoon tea, and also for the splendid maner in which they entertained the visiting ladies during the Dominion tournament.
