EDUCATION.
TO THE EDITOE. Siß—ln your leading article of.the 17th you put the very pertinent query, “Are our universities and schools inculcating the right principles into those under their charge, or are they merely distributing information that will be useful for ex-amination-passing? ” It can be answered with full assurance in reference to our celebrated Waitaki High School, whose illustrious rector makes it his main object to turn out manly men, men of high aims, and lofty purposes, who leave their mark for good in their day and generation. Our W.G.H. schools are equally fortunate in having teachers to guide the young girls to have the same high aims and Purposes. Our high schools are mostly ortunate in that respect, but I am speaking of those of which I have personal knowledge. I esteem Mr Milner as a great Empire builder, for it is men of character and ability who make the component elements in a great Empire like our own._ The foundation of tho success of our high schools is reyeyence for eternal things. The opening exercises, wherein the Almighty God and His Word are acknowledged and reverenced, is one of the main factors in turning out manly men and women. If our primary schools were opened in the same manner it would have the same effect of creating a reverence for eternal things, and give not only a foundation for higli aims and characters, but it would also give a foundation for the Sunday schools and other methods for giving Biblical instruction to be carried on with greatly enhanced success. It might also stimulate the home to help on the good work, as the very great majority of fathers and mothers like to see their boys and girls walking in straight paths. I believe the great majority of our primary school _ teachers would also welcome this innovation, which would be helpful to them in keeping order and discipline, and above all, helping them to turn out manly boys, whose aim would be to do the right at all times. — I am, etc., G. Steinoer. Onmaru, May 21.
