OTAGO POWER BOARD.
, TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —The Southland Power Board is to be congratulated on the prompt and ample manner in which it discloses its financial position On April 6-—six days after the dose of its financial year—this board published a statement showing the revenue results for the year ended March 31. Although more than seven weeks have elapsed since the close of its financial year, the Otago Power Board has as yet given no indication of its financial position. What has happened to the members of this mutual admiration society? Are they hibernating or are they busy hatching excuses? If so, it is just as well to remind the chairman (Mr Boyd) that his slogan, “people should not object to paying rates, because the board’s service is such a boon,” finds little or no favour with the great majority of the ratepayers, especially when it is known that there are to-day power consumers benefiting at the expense of the ratepayers. Perhaps the -experts will remove these anomalies. It is understood that the experts have commenced an investigation of the board’s affairs; thus the future of the ratepayers will largely depend on the manner in which their recommendations are carried out. It is quite probable, however, that little good may be achieved if the two newly-elected members also develop “ sleeping sickness ” when they take up their duties as members of the Otago Power Board.—l am, etc., R. C. Read. Whenuakoa, May 20. .
