EARLY SETTLEMENT IN OTAGO.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— With reference to the letter of “ P„”. in this morning’s paper, he does not make the position clear. The position is “that, in about 1830, Mr Archibald Anderson leased a run of about 30,000 acres, which extended by the Clutha River to Stoney Creek, with the lake Tuakitoto on the eastern boundary and extending back to Manuka - Island. Of this Mr Anderson, in 1859, purchased 1500 acres in and' around Stirling. . The homestead of which was and is known as “The Hermitage.” Sir Robert Paterson purchased part of this run and called it "Barnego.”—l am, etc., P. Nelson.
