SOUTH OTAGO.

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Odr Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, May 12. DRY WEATHER. Farmers are becoming alarmed at the continuance of the drought. Old residents maintain that never previously has the district experienced such a long continued dry spell at this season of the year. Turnip crops in Warepa, Waiwera, Hillend, Greenfield, Awamangu, etc., are the poorest for years, and unless the dry spell is followed by a very mild winter and early spring the outlook* for stock is bad. Meantime most folks are rejoicing in the warmth and sunshine, which is more like that of full midsummer than the first month of winter. ; BEACH POPULAR. • ( Owing to the fine weather a number of ' families have removed to Kaka Point for the term holidays. Yesterday there was a great deal of motor traffic to and from the beach, the Baiclutha-Port road being | at present in first-rate order, its condition justifying the large expenditure by I the County Council since the road became | a main highway. RUGBY FOOTBALL. There was no match of importance at Balclutha on Saturday. Clutha 111 do- 1 feated High School on the Show Ground j by 12 points to 3 points after a hard game. At Stirling, Clutha I and Star ■ fought a stiff battle, which ended in favour of Star by 11 points to 6 points. | It is said that the game was not all that i it should have been, and that the referee j would have been justified in acting in a ; more drastic manner. At a meeting of the Sub-union Emer- 1 gcncy Committee the following clearances were granted:-—To Clutha—J. Ormistou (Raglan). H. M’Miilan (Alhambra), T. Wilson (Ranfurly), J. Murphy (Clinton); . to Star, J. Walls (Clutha). Owing to* the Milton ground not being available on i June 7, the fixtures on that date have been changed for those of May 21. This nlTccts the north side only.
