CONSUMPTION.
AN ALLEGED CURE. HEALTH DEPARTMENT SCEPTICAL. (Pek United Press Association.) WANGANUI, May 7. The claim that he has discovered a cure for consumption and other ailments affecting the lungs is made by Mr Robert Ireland, a retired farmer, of Wanganui His theory is that a remedy to be effective must be applied in the most direct manner possible. His treatment consists of the application of an' ointment which is smeared on brown paper and tied over the chest. In four or five hours the body absorbs this. ■ Mr V. Boyd,- of Wanganui, who has been applying the ointment for some time, states that it is too early to ffay definitely that it is a cure. “ I have been using it, and I am much better as a result. My doctor is- pleased with the way I am shaping, and told me to keep on with it," he said. Mr Ireland has communicated with Dr Watt, deputy chief of the Health Department, and advised him of the ingredients. Dr Watt was sceptical about the ointment effecting cures, and expressed the opinion that it would be harmful to the skin Mr Ireland believes that he is wrong in this, and pointed to the fact that Mr Boyd had been using it for some time, and his skin has not been affected in any way.
