THE WATER SUPPLY.
QUANTITY IN STORAGE. A SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION. The position of the Dunedin water supply was summarised by Cr- Begg (chairman of the Water Committee) at the meeting of the City Council last night in the following statement:— “ Tlie rainfall for the past fortnight, which amounted to a little over half an- inch, was sufficient only slightly to increase the flow of the creeks and to steady the daily fall in the storage reservoirs. The levels of the reservoirs this morning and the amount of water in each as compared with a fortnight ago arc as follow: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23. Below overflow. Gallons. RoSs Creek .. .. 12ft 9in 22,800.000 Southern .. .. Bft 2in 39,400'000 Sullivan dam .. 2ft Oin 25,100,000 Service reservoirs .. ~ .. 3,845,000 91.145.000 WEDNESDAY, MAY 7. note that the public was cutting down its water consumption very consider ably. * “ The public must be given great credit for the manner in which it is helping us,” Cr Begg added. A fortnight ago 4,000,000 gallons a day had been required, and now the consumption had been substantially reduced. At the same time the’ committee could not go on losing water at this rate for long, aiuP if there was no rain further restrictions would have to be imposed.
